FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: Toward the end of June, the parish council and I met to discuss the possibility of offering events at our parish in the remainder of the year. The decisions born out of that consultation are the following.

(1) We will restart the monthly agapé gatherings – light refreshments offered in the hall of the church and remembering those who celebrate their birthdays or name days that month. We will still try to keep them connected to the youth Masses, but we may offer them in the future at other times as well. One such occasion is the summer time. On August 1, we will have our first agapé gathering, after the lifting of restrictions, and it will be coordinated with the help of the St. Emeric Altar Guild.

There is a reason that this type of church gathering is called agapé. It is a Greek word meaning the highest form of love – a self-sacrificial love. In addition, it was also used as a name for the communal meals and gatherings of the ancient Christians held on Sundays (either after the Eucharist or later in the day). The First letter of Corinthians (11:20-34) contains the earliest mention of such gathering.

(2) On August 22 after the Sunday Mass, we will have a St. Stephen Picnic. It will not be a festival as in the past years, but something smaller. While we found it very difficult to bring together a full-fledged festival in the current circumstances, we did not want to give up completely on the momentum that was built up in the past in connection with the Feast of St. Stephen. If the weather cooperates we will be outside, with some light meal, and a little program. More information to follow.

(3) St. Emeric Altar Guild will organize the Harvest Festival on October 3. I am grateful for their willingness to be so active in our parish.

(4) The traditional Feast of St. Emeric will be observed on November 7. Likewise, we would like to organize a New Year’s Eve celebration on December 31.

This is a sketch of the parish events for the rest of the year. Perhaps, some others may happen as well. It always takes a lot of sacrifice, time, and strength to organize these events. Thank you to all of you who have helped and will assist in the future. I know that you are doing it for the love of the parish community of St. Emeric. Please, know that it is appreciated.
