FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: There are few things on my mind today. First of all, I would like to thank all those who came to help on our “clean-up day” last week. Even though, the weather did not cooperate at the beginning, we were still able to make our church and the surroundings look much better. We cut down few weed-trees that were growing by the foundation of our church, removed dead tree branches, and spruced up the flowerbeds and the overall look. After the work, we enjoyed a tasty goulash. There is always something to do around our church complex, so perhaps in the near future we may have another clean-up day. I truly appreciate all of you who volunteer and share your time, talent, and treasure with St. Emeric parish. May God reward you!
On Tuesday, November 2, we will celebrate the All Souls Day. Initially, the Church remembered the faithful departed in the Easter season or on some other dates. It was an abbot of a Benedictine monastery, St. Odilo of Cluny (962-1049), who chose the day after All Saints to pray for the deceased. As an abbot of Cluny (which in his time was the most important monastery), he mandated this practice for other Benedictine monasteries that were dependent on Cluny, and soon afterward the custom was adopted by the entire Latin Church. I would like to start a little tradition here for that day: to have Mass on that day where we would read the names of those who have died from our parish since the previous All Souls Day and pray for them. We will do this at the 6PM Mass that day. Since this is the first time doing it, we could include the names of those who passed away earlier. Please let me know.
Finally, let us pray for those who gave their lives in the 1956 uprising of the Hungarian people against the communist dictatorship. May their souls rest in peace. We remain resilient only when our love for God is strong in our hearts. God bless, Fr. Bona
