FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: As you may be aware, each month of the liturgical year is traditionally dedicated to a devotion that has roots in a specific mystery of the faith or a particular saint that is commemorated that month. Thus, for example, the month of June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus because that month we celebrate the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart (although when there is a very early or very late Easter, it may fall outside of June as it happened in 2008 [May 30] and 2011 [July 1]). This practice began in the 16th century with certain months and by the 20th century all the months were connected a popular devotion.

The month of August is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and is of recent origin. In fact, this dedication is even more interesting, because if we look at the liturgical calendar for August, we do not see there a feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. So how did this come about?

The reasons for this dedication are linked to the messages of Our Lady of Fatima and the actions of Pope Pius XII during World War II. The Venerable Pope Pius XII held a deep devotion to Our Lady of Fatima who in 1917 told the shepherd children You have seen Hell where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to My Immaculate Heart. If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will be peace. The war is going to end; if people do not cease offending God, a worse one will break out during the pontificate of Pius XI. … In the end, My Immaculate Heart will triumph.” Although Catholics throughout the ages venerated Our Lady’s heart, Pope Pius had long desired to make this devotion more universal and considered establishing a feast day to promote it throughout the Church.

In 1942, Pope Pius XII consecrated the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and in 1944, he established the feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary on August 22, the octave day of the Assumption of Mary on August 15. This was done in hope of bringing “peace among nations, freedom for the Church, the conversion of sinners, the love of purity and the practice of virtue.” Although in 1970 the feast was moved to the Saturday following the feast of the Sacred Heart, the tradition of dedicating August to the Immaculate Heart of Mary continued among many Catholics. The devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary invites Catholics to reflect on her pure heart and to emulate her in their own lives. This dedication is also seen as a way to honor Mary’s unique relationship with Jesus and to seek her guidance and protection.

STEPHEN DAY PICNIC: Our St. Stephen Day Picnic will be on August 17. Mass of St. Stephen will be at 11:00AM, Picnic food from 12:30-4PM (Hungarian goulash, Hungarian style sausage, Stuffed Cabbage, Tomato, pepper & onion stew (lecsó), lángos (elephant ear), cabbage & noodles, assorted pastries, coffee; children menu: hotdogs, ice-cream). The traditional blessing of bread at 1PM, music throughout, dance presentation… No need to RSVP.

GENERAL REMINDER ABOUT PARKING: With the soon to be completed building across the street, the cul-de-sac is once again open to traffic. We should not be parking in the circle, as it is meant to be a turning area for emergency vehicles, especially firetrucks. As you are aware, we have the possibility of parking for free at the West Side Market parking lot. To secure this parking, you must register your car by submitting a form. I highly recommend this for those who have not done it yet, since parking on our premises is limited to roughly 30 cars only. The filled-out form (check the Opt Out option, but don’t do the log-in part), should be scanned and emailed to: tiffany@westsidemarket.org. In addition to providing these forms, we can help scan and email the filled out forms.
