FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: Welcome to Bishop Martin J. Amos who is here with us today to preside at Mass and install me as the pastor of St. Emeric parish. Bp. Amos grew up in Cleveland (his home parish is Mary Queen of Peace – formerly Our Lady of Good Counsel, Old Brooklyn). He was ordained as priest of our diocese in 1968. In 2001, he was ordained as bishop and was one of our auxiliary bishops until 2006 when he was appointed as the Bishop of Davenport, Iowa. In 2017 he retired and returned to Cleveland where he still helps out pastorally. Thank you, Bp. Amos, for being here with us today.

This weekend the gospel pericope is the call of the first disciples. After having tried all night with no results, upon the words of Christ they tried again and caught an overabundance of fish. When seeing this, Peter said to Jesus, ““Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” For astonishment at the catch of fish they had made seized him and all those with him.” (See the image on the cover of the bulletin.)

When we encounter the divine, when we meditate on the life of Christ, when we look into His Face, we can recognize our own weakness, sinfulness, and inadequacy. Yet, in spite of this obvious reality, Jesus still calls us to follow Him in different vocations. He knows that we are weak, but also He knows what we can accomplish with the help of His grace.

It is with these thoughts of unworthiness that I undertook the call to priesthood and will assume the office of the pastor. I am sorry that you are not receiving a perfect pastor; but you are getting someone who wants to grow in holiness and be that Alter Christus (another Christ) that priests are supposed to be. That is why when I preach, I preach to myself first. Hence, I truly appreciate your prayers offered for this intention.

The primary obligation of a pastor is to lead his people to Heaven (for which he is going to be severely judged by Christ). To be in Heaven means that we are fully united to the only true God who is Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. That union has its beginnings, however, here on earth in baptism. The mold for this union is the will of our Lord Jesus Christ and there is no other path to Heaven except that of Jesus Christ. That is the reason Jesus often said, “Follow me.” My prayer is that we all follow Jesus Christ more and more in all His teachings and through the cross he asked us to pick up and carry. I keep you all in my prayers every day. God bless, Fr. Bona
