FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: This week, on February 2nd, we will celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. On that feast-day, we recall how the Virgin Mary, forty days after the birth of Jesus, presented her child in the Jerusalem temple. According to the custom, the parents, Mary and Joseph, offered two turtledoves or young pigeons as a sacrifice and consecrated the first-born son to the Lord. Anna and Simeon were also present at this offering of the sacrifice, as prescribed by the Mosaic Law, and Simeon called Jesus the light that enlightens the nations.

Interestingly, February 2 goes by other names as well in the Catholic Church, such as the feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary and, more commonly, Candlemas. In the East, this Feast was called Hypapante, a feast of encounter. In fact, Simeon and Anna, who met Jesus in the Temple and recognized him as the Messiah so long awaited, represent humanity that encounters its Lord in the Church.

This feast reminds us that every time we visit a Catholic church, we can encounter God in a similar way that Simeon and Anna encountered the baby Jesus in the Temple. According to Sacrosanctum concilium, the Second Vatican Council’s Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, affirms that Christ is always present in His Church, especially in her liturgical celebrations (SC 7).  This presence is realized in multiple, distinct ways: (1) Christ’s presence is preeminent in the Eucharist – because the Eucharist is His Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity. But Christ is also present in (2) the other sacraments celebrated (when a sacrament is administered, it is truly Christ Himself who acts—e.g., “when a man baptizes, it is really Christ Himself who baptizes”); (3) through the proclamation of Word of God; (4) in the person of the priest (who acts in persona Christi offering the Mass as the same Christ who sacrificed Himself on the cross); and (5) in the gathered assembly (Christ is present when the Church prays fulfilling His promise: “where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them” [Mt 18:20]).

CHILDREN’S CATECHETICAL PROGRAM: This Sunday, February 1, after the 11AM Mass. All children are welcome. It will last about 15 minutes.

THE BLESSING OF ST. BLAISE: February 3rd is the feast-day of St. Blaise, bishop and martyr. He lived in Armenia in the early 4th century and was beheaded for his faith by Emperor Diocletian after terrible torture. He is invoked for the intercession in cases of sore throat and other ailments. The Blessing of St. Blaise (throat blessing) is a sacramental that adds to our prayers for health the aid of the merits of the Church and that of the holy intercessor. We will offer the blessing this weekend, and on February 3.
