FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: The moniker for today’s Sunday is Good Shepherd Sunday. The reason is that on every Fourth Sunday of Easter we read the gospel passage in which Jesus calls himself the Good Shepherd. Very early on, this allegory was adapted by Christians for their artistic depictions of Christ in the catacombs (when Christianity was not legalized and no public depictions of Christian art were allowed). Perhaps the earliest existing image of the Good Shepherd is in Domitilla’s catacomb and dates back to the 2nd century.
This day is also a Day of Prayer for Vocations to priesthood (as instituted by Pope Paul VI in 1964). The need is always there; as Jesus said: “the harvest is great but the laborers are few.” Let us beseech our Good Shepherd not just for abundance of vocations, but also for their quality. As Pope St. Gregory the Great (540-604) remarked: “We can speak only with a heavy heart of so few laborers for such a great harvest, for although there are many to hear the good news there are only a few to preach it. Look about you and see how full the world is of priests, yet in God’s harvest a laborer is rarely to be found; for although we have accepted the priestly office, we do not fulfill its demands.”
Speaking of great pastors, on May 6 we will have the 48th anniversary of the death of Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty. Many of you may still remember his visit to Cleveland in 1974. He was persecuted for the Catholic faith and suffered under both Nazis and Communists. In 2019, he was declared venerable. It means that his life has been thoroughly examined and it was found that he had lived a life that was “heroic in virtue” (the theological virtues are faith, hope, and charity and the cardinal virtues are prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance). The next step is beatification (if God permits), which requires a verification from Heaven, a miracle. Let us ask Venerable Mindszenty for his intercession; who knows, God may grant a miracle through him to some of us here in Cleveland.
NEXT SUNDAY, MAY 7, MAY CROWNING: We will honor our Heavenly Mother on the first Sunday of the month of May. We ask that children who would like to participate, come dressed in their Sunday best, girls preferably in white or pastel dresses. A meeting for the children to go over the details will be 15 minutes before the Mass on Sunday, May 7. On that day we will also celebrate FIRST COMMUNION for one of our parishioners. We invite other children making their first communion in other parishes to join us that day as well and celebrate their first communion at St. Emeric, too. Please, let Fr. Bona know if you have a family member who would participate.
ALSO NEXT SUNDAY: In addition to May Crowning and First Communion, we will have agapé after the Mass (fellowship and refreshments). If someone is willing to contribute food, please call Marika Zsula at 216-676-5863 and leave a message. The music at the next Sunday Mass will be provided by our Youth choir.
NEW CHOIR MEMBERS: Would you like to help us out in the choir? We are looking for volunteers (men and women) who would be willing to bolster the singing. If you are willing, please just come up to the choir loft. Thank you.
KIDS’ CORNER: How many depictions of Blessed Mother do we have in the church? Look at the statues and paintings and count them. If you will have the correct number (spot them all), there is a prize for you (the first one will receive the biggest prize).
