Our St. Stephen Day Picnic was held on August 20., 2023. The day began with Mass of the feast day of St. Stephen. After the church service, the traditional blessing of the new bread opened the festivities followed by a greeting from Mr. Tamás Molnár, the Commercial and Economic Attaché of the Consulate General of Hungary in Chicago. There was great Hungarian music throughout the day, dance presentations by the Cleveland Hungarian Scout Folk Ensemble and short play about the life of St. Stephen. Delicious food served to the hundreds of guests included Hungarian style sausage, stuffed cabbage, Hungarian goulash, lecsó (tomato, pepper & onion stew), lángos (elephant ear), cabbage & noodles, and many homemade assorted pastries.
Hungarians celebrate the life of St. Stephen on Aug. 20, as the faithful son of the Church, the head of state and the father of a family. Because he was Christian and Hungarian. His religiosity shines through, and his charity inspires followers. He was strict, but first with himself, and then with his people. Thanks to the Christian foundations he laid down, the kingdom of Saint Stephen still stands today. Christian values have preserved our nation through the storms of history, and they are still the guarantee of our future. We ask St. Stephen for his powerful intercession for our Hungarian nation, for all Hungarians around the world, and for ourselves. King Saint Stephen, pray for us!
