KING SAINT STEPHEN DAY MASS, PICNIC AND CELEBRATION – AUGUST 17, 2025

We celebrated the feast day of King Saint Stephen (ca. 975-1038) on the grounds of St. Emeric parish on Sunday, August 17, 2025. The day started with a Hungarian-language mass at 11 o’clock in the church, which is 100 years old this year. The youth choir’s songs were accompanied by piano, guitars, and flutes. At the end of the mass, the congregation sang the Hungarian national anthem. After the mass, the kitchen opened with plenty of delicacies. Among others, there was goulash, Hungarian sausage, stuffed cabbage rolls, vegetable stew (lecsó), fried dough (lángos), cabbage & noodles, pastries, coffee, and drinks.
Father Richárd Bona, the parish pastor, blessed and sliced the new bread, and Bálint Bakondi, the Deputy Chief of Mission from the Consulate General of Hungary in Chicago, greeted those gathered for the occasion and delivered the keynote address. The afternoon continued with melodic Hungarian music, church tours, a raffle, crafts for the children, and a folk-dance performance by the Cleveland Hungarian Scout Folk Ensemble. It was a very enjoyable day celebrating our King Saint Stephen, the first Christian king of Hungary, the principal patron saint of Hungary.
