FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: The same liturgical tradition that presents us with an account of Jesus’ temptations in the desert on the first Sunday of the Lent, also offers us the description of the Transfiguration of the Lord on the second Sunday of Lent. In this ancient custom, we see how the Church through these Jesus’ two moments wants to keep us based in reality. First, it reminds us that fight with sin and ourselves is unavoidable. We must embrace the active and intentional attitude towards our faith, if we want to be victorious. However, it also points us to the future and shows us the result of faithfulness to Jesus Christ: being renewed and transfigured, as the Lord Himself was transfigured. It will take place when our redemption is complete in the Resurrection of the Body. Then, we will live in the new Heaven and new Earth. Transfiguration is not meant to distract us or make us daydream, but is meant to affect the way we live our lives RIGHT NOW. If we know what a beautiful and eternally lasting end goal is possible, wouldn’t we be doing everything for it in order not to lose it?

THE THREE ASPECTS OF THE FAST: According to Byzantine Catholic tradition, the discipline of the fast consists of three parts:

  • Corporal (bodily) fast, by which we give up certain foods, drinks and amusements, in order to break the hold that such things may have over us.
  • Spiritual or internal fast, by which we seek to turn from any sin, wickedness or evil habits in our lives, so that we may come into God’s presence well-prepared to celebrate our Lord’s Resurrection and our redemption.
  • Spiritual renewal, by which we seek a greater practice of the virtues, a deeper life of prayer, repentance for our sins, and a greater conversion (metanoia) of heart, which manifests itself in good works. All of these are oriented to a deeper union with God – theosis.

THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS AND THE DIVINE MERCY CHAPLET AT THE SHRINE OF ST. ELIZABETH will be prayed in the afternoon during the Fridays of Lent. Prayers will begin at 3pm and last approximately 45 minutes. This would be interactive with all taking turns in leading the prayers at each station or decades if they desire. Although the prayers will be primarily in English, we will welcome some stations or decades prayed in Hungarian. Please R.S.V.P. Mark Yonke via text or phone call @ 440-822-7617

A Review of Lenten Regulations for Latin Catholics: 1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of abstinence from meat and also days of fast, that is, only one full meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. 2. All Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence from meat. 3. The obligation to abstain from meat commences at 14 years old. 4. The obligation to fast commences at 18 years of age and ends at 59 years of age.

LEARNING ABOUT MASS: This Sunday, March 16, after 11AM Mass in our hall, we will have a catechetical program using the short videos of Bp. Kornél Fábry. After watching the video, I will offer some comments, and have time for questions. The plan would be to keep it under half an hour. All of you are invited.
