FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) Welcome to Bp. Martin Amos who is celebrating with us our patronal feast day, Saint Emeric, and the 100th anniversary of the consecration of our church building. Bp. Amos, a Cleveland native, was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Cleveland on May 25, 1968 (he was one of 37 men who were ordained priests that year – Fr. Ted Marszal, who is concelebrating today, was also part of that class). After ordination, Fr. Amos served in several roles, including as an academic dean at the Borromeo High School and pastor. From 2001 to 2006, he served as an auxiliary bishop in our diocese (ministering mainly in the Akron area). In 2006, the Holy Father appointed him as the eighth bishop of Davenport, Iowa, where he served until his retirement in 2017. After retiring, Bishop Amos returned to Cleveland where he continues to serve the Church. We are very happy to have him here with us as we also celebrate our feast day and the centennial anniversary. Warmest welcome also to all of you who are joining us today for this very special celebration. We appreciate your presence and your support.
(2) For this occasion, among other things, we have rearranged the Msgr. Boehm memorial room where we have some historical items and pictures on display. Please, stop by and see the little exhibit.
(3) The music for next Sunday’s Mass is provided by our Youth choir.
BOOK OF THE NAMES OF THE DEAD: Many parishes have the custom of giving a place of honor to a book in which community members and visitors write the names of their beloved dead. This practice provides the living with an opportunity for healing and consolation in the face of grief as the parish community includes the names from the book in their prayer for the faithful departed. We will also begin this custom here at St. Emeric parish and we will have the book displayed by St. Anthony statue. Those included in this book will be mentioned in the petitions of the weekend liturgies under the reference “those recorded in our Book of the Names of the Dead.” The Book of the Names of the Dead was inspired by the ancient practice of recording the dates of the deaths of loved ones in a necrology, a public record or registry of death. The book at St. Emeric is left open for you to write the names of the deceased loved ones and for others to read the names, remember, and pray for the repose of their souls. Remembering all of these men and women who have gone before us, “marked with the sign of faith,” helps us better understand and appreciate our faith in the Christ our risen Lord who conquers sin and death and brings new life to all.
BOOK OF PRAYER INTENTIONS: This book will be displayed by the statue of Sacred Heart of Jesus. We invite you to record in this book the intercessions and prayer requests for the sick, the homebound, the suffering, the local and universal Church, the needs of the world, and anyone else in need of prayer. The intentions included in this book will be mentioned in the petitions of the weekend Masses under the reference “those recorded in our parish book of prayer intentions.” Remember also in your own prayer the needs expressed on the pages of this book.
