FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) Last Sunday we held an outdoor procession in honor of the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The weather cooperated (albeit it was a hot day), the altars were beautifully decorated, and the children with the flower petals and many of you being there and singing aided greatly this solemn celebration. Thank you to all of you who have contributed to this feast with your work and sacrifice. May God reward your efforts. The reason we have Eucharistic processions is to express our homage and gratitude to the Lord and to witness to the world that we truly believe that Jesus Christ is present with us with his Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity under the species of bread and wine. I hope we will do the Corpus Christi procession next year as well.

(2) Fr. András Mezei, my predecessor here at St. Emeric, will be coming to Cleveland this week and will spend few days with us. On Sunday, July 6, he will be preaching at the 11AM Mass, after which we will have an agapé meal downstairs. Everyone is invited to stay with us for refreshments and fellowship. Thank you for all those who prepare the food and drink and/or contribute toward it.

SAINTS PETER AND PAUL, APOSTLES: Today, on June 29, the Church celebrates the feast day of Sts. Peter and Paul. As early as the year 258, there is evidence of an already lengthy tradition of celebrating the solemnities of both Saint Peter and Saint Paul on the same day. Why June 29?

The celebration of Saints Peter and Paul on June 29 is linked to the ancient Roman myth of Romulus and Remus, twin brothers, the legendary founders of Rome. The early Church adapted this cultural tradition by transforming the pagan festival into a Christian observance, commemorating Peter and Paul as the spiritual founders of Rome. While it is widely believed that both Peter and Paul were martyred under Nero’s reign, with Peter crucified upside down and Paul beheaded between 64 and 67 A.D., the likelihood of both being martyred on the same day is considered low. The decision to celebrate their deaths on June 29 was likely driven by the desire to Christianize a pre-existing pagan festival. The date coincided with the feast of Romulus and Remus, and the Church used this opportunity to shift the focus to the new spiritual founders of Rome, Peter and Paul. Together, the two saints are the founders of the See of Rome, through their preaching, ministry and martyrdom there.

PRAYER TO KING ST. LADISLAUS (feastday: June 27): Hail, good King, all praiseworthy St. Ladislaus! Glory be to you, our gracious and mighty patron, our kind protector! O Ladislaus, confessor of the Lord, strengthen thy people by thy intercession, that the grace of thy blessedness may soften us who are weighed down by the weight of sins, that we may obtain, under thy guidance, eternal reward. St. Ladislaus, King, the steady hope of thy people, look to the piety of the nation that seeks thee, and intercede for us, for the salvation of us all. Amen
