FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension. As explained in the previous issue of the bulletin, in countries where the Ascension is not a holy day of obligation, it is moved to the following Sunday. This feast asks us not to forget the principal direction of our lives. While living here on Earth, we must always look up, that is, realize that our lives are always about God: about bringing glory to Him through our deeds. This vertical dimension (heavenly orientation) takes precedence and gives meaning then to the horizontal dimension of our lives (earthly matters). To keep this principal direction strong, we must nourish our relationship with the Lord through the Sacraments of Confession and Eucharist. Also, we must be choosing to live and keep the commandments of the Lord every day. We cannot be just accidental Catholics, we must deliberately choose to follow the Catholic Faith. In other words, being intentional Catholic.
(2) I am away from the parish and will be back on 26th. There will not be weekday Masses until the 29th and substitute priests will be covering the weekend Masses. If there is an emergency, please call your closest, neighboring parish. If there are funerals, please email me at rbona@dioceseofcleveland.org and I will try to arrange for a priest. I keep you all in my prayers.
NOVENA TO THE HOLY SPIRIT FOR THE SEVEN GIFTS: The novena in honor of the Holy Spirit is the oldest of all novenas since it was first made at the direction of Our Lord Himself when He sent His apostles back to Jerusalem to await the coming of the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost. It is still the only novena officially prescribed by the Church. Addressed to the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity, it is a powerful plea for the light and strength and love so sorely needed by every Christian.
This Novena begins on the day after the Solemnity of the Ascension, Friday of the 6th Week of Easter, even if the Solemnity of the Ascension is transferred to the 7th Sunday. I highly recommend praying this novena (even if we have a late start). Below is a sample version:
Come, Spirit of Wisdom, dispose our hearts to know and value the things of heaven above the things of earth and show us the way to salvation.
Come, Spirit of Understanding, enlighten our minds to the mysteries of salvation and grant that we may come to a fuller knowledge of you.
Come, Spirit of Counsel, guide us in the way of your commandments. Incline us to do good. Keep us from evil and bring us to everlasting life.
Come, Spirit of Fortitude, strengthen us in every trial and help us in our struggle against evil. Never let us be parted from you.
Come, Spirit of Knowledge, help us to see beyond the passing joys of this world to the glories you have prepared for us.
Come, Spirit of Piety, stir up our hearts to true holiness and love of you. May we always seek you in spirit and in truth.
Come, Spirit of the Fear of the Lord, teach us ever to set the Lord before us and to avoid whatever is displeasing to you. Bring us all one day to the fullness of your love.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.
NEW CHOIR MEMBERS: We are looking for volunteers (men and women) who would be willing to bolster our singing. If you are willing, please just come up to the choir loft. Thank you.
LAST WEEKEND’S COLLECTION: Weekend totals will be printed in the future bulletin. May God reward your generosity in supporting the church. Thank you for sending in your donations by mail or using our website https://stemeric.com/donations/.
