FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: Pope Benedict XVI in 2012 in his homily for the feast of Epiphany commented on the wise men from the East: “They were men with restless hearts, not satisfied with the superficial and the ordinary. They were men in search of the promise, in search of God. And they were watchful men, capable of reading God’s signs, his soft and penetrating language. But they were also courageous, yet humble: we can imagine them having to endure a certain amount of mockery for setting off to find the King of the Jews, at the cost of so much effort. For them it mattered little what this or that person, what even influential and clever people thought and said about them. For them it was a question of truth itself, not human opinion. Hence they took upon themselves the sacrifices and the effort of a long and uncertain journey. Their humble courage was what enabled them to bend down before the child of poor people and to recognize in him the promised King, the one they had set out, on both their outward and their inward journey, to seek and to know.”
He then continued: “The restless heart of which we spoke earlier, echoing Saint Augustine, is the heart that is ultimately satisfied with nothing less than God, and in this way becomes a loving heart. Our heart is restless for God and remains so, even if every effort is made today, by means of most effective anaesthetizing methods, to deliver people from this unrest. But not only are we restless for God: God’s heart is restless for us. God is waiting for us. He is looking for us. He knows no rest either, until he finds us. God’s heart is restless, and that is why he set out on the path towards us – to Bethlehem, to Calvary, from Jerusalem to Galilee and on to the very ends of the earth. God is restless for us, he looks out for people willing to “catch” his unrest, his passion for us, people who carry within them the searching of their own hearts and at the same time open themselves to be touched by God’s search for us.”
CATECHESIS: We will restart our catechetical meetings next Sunday, January 11. As we did last year after 11AM Mass in our hall, we will watch a short video or a presentation, followed by a Q&A. The plan is to keep it under half an hour. All of you are invited. This program is in Hungarian.
TRADITIONAL HUNGARIAN DOUGHNUTS: The Ladies of the St. Emeric Altar Guild are baking Hungarian style doughnuts. They are $18 a dozen and must be ordered by January 14, 2026, by calling one of the ladies: Marika Zsula 216-676-5863 or Maria Meszaros 440-331-0391. Pick up: January 18, Sunday, before or after the 11:00 AM Mass or the day before, Saturday between 4 and 5 PM. Thank you for supporting St. Emeric Church!
PRAYER FOR THE NEW YEAR: You have awakened us, Lord, to a new year. Grant your blessing upon our intention to align our steps with your commandments and to better conform to your eternal plan in the new year. You are the Lord of life and sustainer of all things. If it pleases your wisdom that this year be the last year of our lives, let your call find us in a state of grace, strengthened by your sacraments. Keep troubles far from us. Help us on the path that leads to you, through our Lord Jesus Christ, for He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Amen.
