FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: On February 3, 2023, Pope Francis has accepted the resignation from the office of auxiliary of the metropolitan archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest, presented by Bishop Ferenc Cserháti after he had reached the age of 75. The Hungarian Catholic Bishops’ Conference, at its meeting on March 7-8, appointed Gábor Mohos the Auxiliary Bishop of Esztergom-Budapest, as the coordinator of pastoral care for Hungarians abroad. Bishop Mohos was born in 1973, in Budapest. He studied in Esztergom and Rome and was ordained priest in 1999 and bishop in 2018.
On the occasion of this news, I would like to present a short history of episcopal pastoral care of Hungarians abroad. The first unofficial Hungarian bishop abroad was Cardinal József Mindszenty. After being forced to go abroad in 1971, he made many pastoral trips among Hungarians around the world. Although he had no jurisdiction over the Hungarian faithful, he was accepted because of his unique legal and historical position. In his emigration, he tried unsuccessfully to obtain an auxiliary bishop for the Hungarian people of the world. For eight years after Mindszenty’s death, the question of the episcopate of Hungarians living abroad was not resolved. Parishes were filled on an ad hoc basis: if the parishioners or the local bishop found a priest he could invite, he became a priest, if not, he did not.
In 1983, the Holy See decided to settle the situation, at least nominally, and so appointed László Irányi SP (Szeged, 9 April 1923 – Cologne, 6 March 1987), prior of the American province of the Piarist order, as bishop of the Hungarian community abroad. After his death in 1987, the Vatican appointed another religious, Attila Miklósházy SJ, (Diósgyőr, 5 April 1931 – Pickering, ON, Canada, 28 December 2018), a Canadian. In their activities, Irányi and Miklósházy did not report to the Congregation for Bishops, but to the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People.
In 2006, Miklósházy retired and in the same year priest Ferenc Cserhati (living in München, Germany) was entrusted with the coordinating work of the Hungarian pastoral ministry abroad. Later, on 15 June 2007, he was appointed auxiliary bishop of Esztergom and Budapest. Unlike his predecessors, the circumstances of his duties have changed significantly. He is no longer the bishop of Hungarians abroad, but the auxiliary bishop of a diocese in Hungary, whose task is to provide pastoral care for Hungarians abroad. The appointment of Gábor Mohos continues this arrangement (source: Róbert Gyula Dudás).
AIR-CONDITIONING: In the coming weeks, as the temperatures rise, we will begin to use the newly installed air-conditioning system. Please, have patience as we find the right setting.
MAY 7, MAY CROWNING: We will honor our Heavenly Mother on the first Sunday of the month of May. We ask that children who would like to participate, come dressed in their Sunday best, girls preferably in white or pastel dresses. A meeting for the children to go over the details will be 15 minutes before the Mass on Sunday, May 7. On that day we will also celebrate First Communion for one of our parishioners. We invite other children making their first communion in other parishes to join us that day as well and celebrate their first communion at St. Emeric, too. Please, let Fr. Bona know if you have a family member who would participate.
