FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) Last Sunday we celebrated the feast of our patron saint – St. Emeric and the 100th anniversary of the consecration of our church building. Everything went smoothly and we have received great feedback. I would like to express my gratitude to Bp. Martin Amos and the priests who came to celebrate with us. Thank you to all those who have helped with the organization of the feast-day: the cooks, the helpers, the organizers, the decorators, and many volunteers in various areas…too many to name here. Thank you very much for all your hard work! We also appreciate the contribution and support of our parishioners, friends and guests who were here last week. The net proceeds from the dinner were $6,750, which we dedicate toward the upkeep of our church.
(2) We all love old architecture, but it comes with a cost. Historical buildings require constant attention and appropriate care. I know that in the last 100 years, several repairs were undertaken and we intend to continue in these efforts. In fact, this past week the workers began to work on the church to address water leaking through our walls. Both on the south and north side, on the roof line of the building, they will remove and replace caulk at all window perimeters; replace flashing; infill outside corner gaps/openings where bricks meet (the external side of the sanctuary facing west). In addition, some tuck-pointing will be done on the critical places. On the north side of the building, on the ground level, sealing of the cracks and tuck-pointing will be performed to stop cracking and repair deteriorated mortar. This project will cost $20,000 for which we have received a grant of $10,000 from the Bethlen Gábor Alapítvány. In the spring we will continue to address the masonry issues of our church building. Before we would embark on our much needed painting projects, we need to resolve the water issues completely. So, again, thank you very much for your support!
(3) For the occasion of the 100th anniversary of our church building, among other things, we have rearranged the Msgr. Boehm memorial room where we have some historical items and pictures on display. Please, stop by and see the little exhibit.
(4) The music for this Sunday’s Mass is provided by our Youth choir.
(5) As you can see below, next week, on November 23rd , we will not have our 11AM Mass here at St. Emeric, but it will be held at the Shrine of St. Elizabeth at 11:30AM. We will be celebrating the patronage of St. Elizabeth of Hungary. She is not only appreciated by the Hungarians, but is quite well known in the world as well. Our Mass and the event afterward is one of the four events that we hold at the Shrine (as agreed to with the Institute at the beginning and enshrined in the lease). Originally, we planned this celebration for the 16th, but due to other circumstances, we had to move it to 23rd and we have properly communicated this in mid-October with the Institute running the Shrine. I hope that many of you will join us.
ELIZABETH FEAST DAY CELEBRATION WILL BE NOVEMBER 23: Solemn Bilingual Mass at 11:30 AM followed by dinner. That day we will not have 11AM Mass at St. Emeric, but, we will transfer it to St. Elizabeth with a 11:30 start time. Dinner Menu: half of stuffed chicken, mushroom gravy, green beans, rice, salad and dessert, coffee. Music, St. Elizabeth Dance troop performance, bake sale. Cost: $30 for adults, for students 13 and under $15, for children under 5 free. Seating limited to 150 (no take-out if the event sells out).
