FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: Every October the Catholic Church in the United States celebrates Respect Life Month, and the first Sunday of October is observed as Respect Life Sunday. As Catholics, we are called to cherish, defend, and protect those who are most vulnerable, from the beginning to the end of their lives, and at every point in between. During the month of October, the Church asks us to reflect more deeply on the dignity of every human life.

Out of all the issues, the threat of abortion remains the Church’s preeminent priority because it directly attacks life itself, because it takes place within the sanctuary of the family, and because of the number of lives destroyed.

Even though the Supreme Court’s ruling struck down the Roe v. Wade decision, our efforts to protect the unborn remain as important as ever. The issue of the protection of the unborn is now fought on the state level. Evil always wants to spread and thus it is no coincidence that in states that promote abortion the matters become progressively worse as all the restrictions are removed one by one and even the door to infanticide is open. Additionally, many proponents of abortion contaminate many other important issues by inserting it into legislation regarding immigration, care for the poor, and health care reform.

This is a black and white issue and there is no such thing as privately being opposed, but publicly supporting it (for the sake of others who may want to have that legal option). Abortion is a murder and it does not depend on whether one “believes” in it or not. It is a scientific fact that life begins at conception. By fighting to ban abortion, we are not forcing our beliefs on others. This is natural (divine) law binding everyone. It is common sense.

THANK YOU very much to all of you who in my absence have helped out in taking care of all the necessary matters for our parish. I could also say it in general as well to all of you who throughout the year help the parish in whatever form:  I appreciate your spirit of generosity.

OCTOBER MASS COUNT: Every October, parishes across the diocese obtain a head count at all Sunday Masses in order to determine how many parishioners attend weekend Masses. The annual Mass attendance count is intended to provide a comprehensive profile of the diocese and help the individual parishes with their planning and ministry. The two weekends designated for this purpose are: October 4-5 and October 11-12.

ROSARY: In the month of October, which is dedicated to the Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, I would like us to pray communally the Rosary before the 11AM Mass on the Sundays of October. We would start at 10:25am and finish in roughly 25 minutes, which would still give some 10 minutes of silence before the Mass. If you come after 10:25, please feel free to join us in this prayer. Even the few decades of the rosary are worth praying. Also, if someone would like to volunteer to lead the rosary or some of its parts, please let me know.

MAJOR MAINTENANCE ISSUE:  Our aging boiler is on its way to break down. We had a leaking boiler for some time and were trying to fix it internally through chemical solutions, but it worked only for so long and is no longer a viable option. Every advice that I received recommended us to obtain a new boiler, as investing a substantial amount of money in a 30-year-old boiler is not a wise investment. I hope very much that we receive good offers, but the truth is that it will be a major expenditure for us. Once we come to a specific number, I will let you know. If you could help with offsetting the cost, it would be greatly appreciated. Mark your donation with “new boiler.” Thank you to all of you who have already donated. God bless!

LAST WEEKEND’S COLLECTION: Sunday Collection: $918; Boiler cost offset: $615. May God reward your generosity in supporting the church. Thank you for sending in your donations by mail or using our website https://stemeric.com/donations/.

PLEASE PRAY FOR THE SICK, especially for Bev Kimar, Teréz Kalász, Lajos Boday, Márta Takács, Kathy Szabó, Alex Szaday, Virginia Kachmar, Margaret Falk, Mária Hokky, Balázs Bedy, and Sylvia Öszényi.

PLEASE PRAY FOR THE DECEASED, especially for Otto Hunyadi, whose Funeral Mass will be here at St. Emeric on Thursday, October 9 at 10:30AM.

THIS SUNDAY the 11:00 AM Mass from St. Emeric church will be livestreamed at https://www.facebook.com/saintemeric/

LET US PRAY THREE HAIL MARYS FOR OUR PARISH EVERY DAY!
