FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: We begin the beautiful month of May. Not merely because the weather turns for better, but because this is the month that is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This practice is the oldest instance of a devotion extending over an entire month. The May devotion in its present form originated at Rome where Father Latomia of the Roman College of the Society of Jesus, to counteract infidelity and immorality among the students, made a vow at the end of the eighteenth century to devote the month of May to Mary. From Rome the practice spread to the other Jesuit colleges and thence to nearly every Catholic church of the Latin rite. The practice of dedicating the month of May to our Lady was popularized especially by the Rosary Encyclicals of Leo XIII – beginning in 1883 and concluding in 1889, the Pontiff wrote twelve encyclicals and five apostolic letters on the Rosary.

Today we will honor our Heavenly Mother and Queen by crowing her statue. I am grateful to all those who contributed to this pious custom of veneration either by preparation or participation. However, let us remember our Mother not just today, but every day of our lives. May the month of May be a time for us to strengthen our relationship with her. As Paul VI wrote in the encyclical Mense maio (Month of May): “Since Mary is rightly to be regarded as the way by which we are led to Christ, the person who encounters Mary cannot help but encounter Christ likewise. For what other reason do we continually turn to Mary except to seek the Christ in her arms, to seek our Savior in her, through her, and with her?” Mary, Mother of God, pray for us! Fr. Bona

TODAY’S SECOND COLLECTION is to Support the Catholic Home Missions. Over 40% of dioceses in United States and its territories are considered mission territories, because they are unable to fund essential pastoral activities needed in their communities. Your support funds religious education, seminary formation, lay ministry training, and other programs that build vibrant faith communities right here in the United States. Please be generous.
