The Institute of Christ the King the Sovereign Priest (ICKSP) has decided to leave our Shrine of St. Elizabeth of Hungary. They will depart from the shrine on June 1 and the lease agreement with them will be terminated. This change necessitates a Mass schedule adjustment for us. As you know, the shrine is part of St. Emeric parish and is a key historical church for Hungarian Catholics in the U.S.
After consultation and considering several alternatives, I have decided to move the 9 a.m. Sunday Mass in English from St. Emeric to St. Elizabeth. The last 9 a.m. Mass here at St. Emeric will be on June 7 and the 9 a.m. Mass at the shrine will start on June 28 and, like here at St. Emeric, it will be in English. Please, note the two-week hiatus in this transition.
The reasons behind this decision were the following: a) I did not want to separate the Hungarian community. I very much enjoyed seeing all of us together at the 11 a.m. Mass; b) Before the coming of the ICKSP, this was our schedule from 2018 on and therefore this is not something new. In a sense we are returning to an earlier schedule; c) with the exception of one church, no other nearby parishes offer 9 a.m. Mass and thus the shrine can provide an alternative.
This is a temporary decision and after some time, I will evaluate it and see if we need to make modifications to this schedule. We will also hold, as we have been in the past, bilingual Masses at 11 a.m. at the shrine on some occasions. I wish ICKSP and their community all the best.
