FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) Eighty years ago, on Aug. 6th and 9th, atomic bombs were dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These attacks killed hundreds of thousands of people, overwhelmingly innocent civilians, and became symbols of the great evil and destruction humans are capable of committing. However, evil, no matter how powerful, will never conquer God. The “Miracle of Hiroshima,” proves this point. Not many people are aware that four Jesuits were nearby the ground zero of the Hiroshima attack. They survived and the radiation that killed thousands in the months following had no effect on them. The Jesuits priests Hugo Lassalle, Hubert Schiffer, Wilhelm Kleinsorge, and Hubert Cieslik were at the rectory of the church of Our Lady of the Assumption, one of the few buildings that resisted the bomb blast. They only sustained minor injuries from the broken windows. The doctors warned them that the radiation they received would produce serious lesions, as well as illness and premature death. No disorders ever developed. In 1976 Father Schiffer confirmed that the other Jesuits were still alive and without any ailments. They were examined by dozens of doctors some 200 times over the course of the following years, without any trace of the radiation being found in their bodies. The four religious never doubted that they had been blessed with protection by God and the Blessed Virgin Mary. “We were living the message of Fatima and we prayed the Rosary every day,” they explained (source: www.catholicnewsagency.com).

(2) The music for next Sunday’s Mass is provided by our Youth choir.

HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION: On August 15, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven is the bodily taking up of the Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her earthly life. This solemnity is a Holy Day of Obligation, meaning that we are required to attend Mass. I know that many of you will probably attend near your workplace or your home, but here at St. Emeric we will have the following schedule: on Wednesday evening at 5:00PM the Mass will be in English, on Thursday at 9AM, 12Noon (the language depends on those present), and at 6:00PM (in Hungarian). I have highlighted the schedule for this solemnity in the above box.

NEXT SUNDAY – ST. STEPHEN DAY PICNIC: Our St. Stephen Day Picnic will be on August 17. Mass of St. Stephen will be at 11:00AM, Picnic food from 12:30-4PM (Hungarian goulash, Hungarian style sausage, Stuffed Cabbage, Tomato, pepper & onion stew (lecsó), lángos (elephant ear), cabbage & noodles, assorted pastries, coffee; children menu: hotdogs, ice-cream). The traditional blessing of bread at 1PM, music throughout, dance presentation… No need to RSVP.

EUCHARISTIC PROCESSION: Legion of Mary of the Diocese of Cleveland invites you to a traditional Eucharistic Procession on Saturday, August 30, 2025 beginning with Holy Mass at 11am at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Cleveland. RSVP is not required and all are welcome to attend. For more information, please email contact@legionofmarynorthernohio.org   or go to https://www.facebook.com/legionofmarynorthernohio/

GENERAL REMINDER ABOUT PARKING: With the soon to be completed building across the street, the cul-de-sac is once again open to traffic. We should not be parking in the circle, as it is meant to be a turning area for emergency vehicles, especially firetrucks. As you are aware, we have the possibility of parking for free at the West Side Market parking lot. To secure this parking, you must register your car by submitting a form. I highly recommend this for those who have not done it yet, since parking on our premises is limited to roughly 30 cars only. The filled-out form (check the Opt Out option, but don’t do the log-in part), should be scanned and emailed to: tiffany@westsidemarket.org. In addition to providing these forms, we can help scan and email the filled out forms.

LAST WEEKEND’S COLLECTION: Sunday Collection: $1,656; Maintenance: $475. May God reward your generosity in supporting the church. Thank you for sending in your donations by mail or using our website https://stemeric.com/donations/.
