FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: Does the Catholic Church have a birthday? A common answer one may hear nowadays is that the Pentecost is the birthday of the Church because on that day the apostles received the Holy Spirit and began openly spreading Jesus’ teaching, thus establishing the visible beginnings of the Church. However, according to our tradition, the birth of the Church is linked to the moment when Christ’s side was pierced by a soldier’s spear after His death on the cross, from which flowed both water and blood. According to St. John Chrysostom (c. 347–407), the water and blood symbolize baptism and the Eucharist, respectively. These two sacraments are the foundational elements from which the Church was born. St. Ambrose (339 – 397) added that as Eve was formed from the sleeping Adam’s side, so the Church was born from the pierced heart of Christ hanging dead on the cross. This was repeated by Pope Pius XII (†1958) in his encyclical Mystici Corporis Christi, 28: “That [Jesus Christ] completed His work on the gibbet of the Cross is the unanimous teaching of the holy Fathers who assert that the Church was born from the side of our Savior on the Cross like a new Eve, mother of all the living.”

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (n. 766), issued in 1993, therefore summarizes that the Church was born primarily from Christ’s total self-giving for our salvation, anticipated in the institution of the Eucharist and fulfilled on the cross. The reason the catechism teaches this, is that according to Catholic understanding the Church is not simply a group of disciples of Jesus who preach the Word of God to the nations. The Church is also the mystical Body of Christ and this can be discerned only if we recognize that the Church was born from the body of Christ hanging on the cross. So the Church is not only functional (to preach), but also mystical in the sense that she is the Body of Christ. Consequently, it is theologically clearer to say that the Church was born on Good Friday and on the Pentecost the Church was manifested to the world.

Since on Good Friday it is rather hard for us to recall and celebrate the birthday of the Church, we will do it today after the 11AM Mass. All of you are invited to come down to our hall for a slice of birthday cake.

PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT FOR THE SEVEN GIFTS: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created, and you shall renew the face of the earth. Let us pray. O God, who have taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant that in the same Spirit we may be truly wise and ever rejoice in his consolation. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PLEASE NOTE: I will be away from the parish this week (on a retreat). Therefore, we will not have a weekday Mass Tuesday–Friday. If there is an emergency, please call your neighboring parish. If there are funerals, please email me at rbona@dioceseofcleveland.org. I keep you all in my prayers. Fr. Bona
