FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) Today we light the second candle on our Advent wreath. The second candle, also purple, represents faith. It is also called the “Bethlehem Candle” as a reminder of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem. May our faith and trust in Jesus Christ continue to grow stronger in this holy season of Advent.

(2) This year the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary will be celebrated on Monday, December 8. The Blessed Mother under the title of the Immaculate Conception is also the patroness of the United States. This solemnity is a Holy Day of Obligation, meaning that we are required to attend Mass. I know that many of you will probably attend near your workplace or your home, but here at St. Emeric we will have the following schedule: on Monday at 9AM, 12 Noon (the language depends on those present), and at 6:00PM (in Hungarian). I have highlighted the schedule for this solemnity in the above box.

(3) Today (December 7), after 11 AM Mass we will have a celebration of St. Nicholas, who would like to visit especially with children.

(4) Thank you very much for all of you who have participated in the #weGIVECATHOLIC online fundraiser to help cover the cost of a much-needed new boiler. We had 30 donors who raised $7,580 dollars. I appreciate your generosity.

(5) The music for next Sunday’s Mass is provided by our Youth choir.

(6) We are publishing the Christmas/New Year Mass schedule. I would like to draw your attention to a special Mass on December 27 (Saturday) at the Shrine of St. Elizabeth of Hungary after which we will have a light reception. That day we will not have 5PM Mass at St. Emeric.

THE BLESSING OF THE BAMBINELLI was first instituted by St. John Paul II. On an Advent Sunday the children of Rome are encouraged to bring the baby Jesus (Bambinelli) from each of their Nativity sets to St. Peter’s Square. Following the Sunday Angelus address, the Pope blesses the figurines. This custom has spread throughout the world. We will celebrate this blessing in two weeks, on the final Sunday of Advent (December 21) after the Mass. All (not only children) are encouraged to bring baby Jesus from their home Nativity sets to the church for this special blessing.

FEAST OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE (December 12): On December 9, 1531, on Tepeyac Hill, located near Mexico City in what is now the state of Mexico, the Virgin Mary appeared to a simple Indian, Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, and asked him to build a church where she could show her maternal goodness. The image of the Virgin Mary miraculously remained on Juan Diego’s cloak, in which he carried the flowers sent by the Virgin to the bishop. Christians have revered this image with great devotion ever since. Pope John Paul II decreed that the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe be celebrated by the whole Church in 2002.
