FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: The reading of the Transfiguration on the Second Sunday of Lent has been a longstanding liturgical tradition in the Western Church, with roots tracing back to at least the 5th century. Pope Leo the Great (reigned from 440-461) referenced the Transfiguration in a sermon on the Saturday before the Second Sunday of Lent (later this day being known as a Saturday Ember Day), linking it to the anticipation of Christ’s Passion and Resurrection. By the Middle Ages, this reading appeared both on the Saturday Ember Day and the Second Sunday of Lent (i.e., two days in a row). The first printing of the Roman Missal in 1474 continued this tradition. In post Vatican II liturgical reforms, only the Second Sunday of Lent retained the Transfiguration Gospel.

The placement of the reading of Transfiguration in Lent serves as a profound reminder of the ultimate purpose of the Lenten journey: to prepare for Easter and the fullness of glory that follows Christ’s suffering and death. Though Lent is a season of penance, prayer, and self-denial, the Transfiguration reveals that this path leads not to despair, but to divine glory. Along this path, we experience the comforting presence of the Son of God, which encourages us to persevere in the truth.

PRESIDENTIAL VISIT: we are honored to welcome Dr. Sulyok Tamás, president of Hungary, who along with his wife Nagy Zsuzsanna, is visiting our parish. They will stay for our 11AM Mass and spend some time with us at our agapé meal afterwards.

The president will be our honored guest speaker at the 1848 commemoration (followed by a pastry reception) which will be later today (March 1) at the Shrine of St. Elizabeth of Hungary at 3:15 PM. All of you are invited. Please note, you may attend the Shrine of St. Elizabeth event, even if you have not RSVP-d.

EVENING OF CONFESSIONS: This Wednesday, March 4, churches across our Diocese will be open for the annual Night of Confession. We will be co-hosting this event with other parishes at the nearby chapel at St. Ignatius High School, located on 3136 Lorain Avenue. Multiple confessors will be available from 5-8pm. Subsequently, our church will not be open for confessions that evening as I will be at this chapel. Parking is available across the street from the chapel next to the Breen Center. If you have mobility issues, please plan to arrive after 5:30pm when the lot next to the fire station will be free of school traffic.

CATECHESIS: We will continue our catechetical meetings next Sunday, March 8. We will meet after 11AM Mass in our hall and will watch a short video or a presentation, followed by a Q&A. The plan is to keep it under half an hour. All of you are invited. This program is in Hungarian.

A Review of Lenten Regulations for Latin Catholics: 1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of abstinence from meat and also days of fast, that is, only one full meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. 2. All Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence from meat. 3. The obligation to abstain from meat commences at 14 years old. 4. The obligation to fast commences at 18 years of age and ends at 59 years of age.
