FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) A happy St. Stephen Day to all of you and welcome to our St. Stephen Mass and Picnic. St. Stephen of Hungary (c. 975-1038), the first Christian king of Hungary, is the principal patron of Hungary.

(2) The image on the cover of the bulletin is the oldest authentic representation of the Holy Crown from 1555 (Fugger Chronicle). Interestingly, all images of the Crown before the mid-17th century show the cross in its original upright position. As you noted, I used the expression the “Holy Crown.” Why is the royal crown of Hungary referred to as Holy Crown?

The name “Holy Crown” was first used in 1256. The first reason for this name is that the Crown is associated with St. Stephen. Particularly important is the event before his death in 1038. According to popular tradition, St. Stephen held up the crown before his death and offered it up to the Blessed Mother, thus consecrating the crown and his kingdom to the Virgin Mary. Secondly, the Crown’s sacred status is also associated with its historical connection to religious relics. Some historians, like Éva Kovács, plausibly suggest that the Crown’s holiness may stem from the presence of a fragment of the True Cross within its original structure, specifically a double-barred reliquary cross that was later replaced by the current plain cross. This theory is supported by accounts of the Crown being reinforced with a relic of great spiritual power, and the use of a patriarchal cross in the royal coat of arms, which is seen as a direct reference to this relic (since reliquary crosses frequently took such a double-barred form). Thirdly, the attribute “holy” was reinforced by the Hungarian medieval legal doctrine (called Doctrine of the Holy Crown) under which the Crown itself was a legal person identical to the state of Hungary. It was the highest dignitary and even superior to the ruling monarch, who ruled “in the name of the crown.” In other words, while in general the crowns were made for the rulers, in Hungary, the ruler was chosen for the crown. Finally, the Crown’s unique role as an “initiation crown,” worn only once during coronation and never illustrated until the 16th century, further underscored its sacred nature, as such crowns were considered too holy to be depicted.

(3) The music for today’s 11AM Sunday Mass is provided by our Youth choir.

EUCHARISTIC PROCESSION: Legion of Mary of the Diocese of Cleveland invites you to a traditional Eucharistic Procession on Saturday, August 30, 2025 beginning with Holy Mass at 11am at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Cleveland. RSVP is not required and all are welcome to attend. For more information, please email contact@legionofmarynorthernohio.org   or go to https://www.facebook.com/legionofmarynorthernohio/

GENERAL REMINDER ABOUT PARKING: With the soon to be completed building across the street, the cul-de-sac is once again open to traffic. We should not be parking in the circle, as it is meant to be a turning area for emergency vehicles, especially firetrucks. As you are aware, we have the possibility of parking for free at the West Side Market parking lot. To secure this parking, you must register your car by submitting a form (available at the doors of the church). I highly recommend this for those who have not done it yet, since parking on our premises is limited to roughly 30 cars only. The filled-out form (check the Opt Out option, but don’t do the log-in part), should be scanned and emailed to us so we can forward them to appropriate person. In addition to providing these forms, we can help scan and email the filled out forms.

NEWS FROM THE ROCK CATHOLIC RADIO! At 12 noon on Sunday, June 1st, St. Peter The Rock Media expanded reach by beginning to simulcast their programming on AM 930 and FM 100.3. This has allowed the radio station to reach around 600,000 more souls in Lorain, Elyria, North Ridgeville, Medina and western Cuyahoga County. As they stated: “While we are widely known as AM 1260 The Rock, based on the signal of our flagship station, you will start to hear us refer to ourselves as ‘The Rock Catholic Radio’ to be inclusive of our new friends to the west and south. Be on the lookout for forthcoming new branding as well!”
