FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) The music for next Sunday’s Mass is provided by our Youth choir.
(2) Today we will restart our catechetical meetings after our 11AM Mass in our hall. We will watch a short video or a presentation, followed by a Q&A. The plan is to keep it under half an hour. All of you are invited. This program is in Hungarian.
THE BAPTISM THAT JESUS sought from John the Baptist was a profound act of humility. Though sinless, he wanted to be seen by other bystanders as a fellow sinner. He had no need of purification, but he desired to identify fully with the human condition. This was part of His mission to take on the sins of the world. Therefore, today’s feast calls us to reflect on our own call to humility, inviting us to follow Christ’s example in our own lives—especially in moments when we may feel called to serve others without seeking recognition.
Indeed, humility is considered the cornerstone of the Christian life. Every saint mentioned and practiced this virtue. Humility is the greatest virtue to cultivate because it fights against the worst vice, pride. It does not mean thinking less of ourselves, it means thinking of ourselves less. In other words, we see reality as it is.
The Litany of Humility is a famous Catholic prayer to help with growing in humility. Where did this prayer come from? We do not know the true author of the prayer. The most popular form came from Cardinal Rafael Merry del Val y Zulueta, the Secretary of State under Pope St. Pius X. But, his version is not the original. The earliest prayer comes from an 1867 book called The Fervent Adorer. The one who compiled the prayers only calls himself a “Roman Catholic Clergyman.” Cardinal del Val likely borrowed from this version of the prayer. For the lack of space in this week’s bulletin, I will publish the prayer next week.
PARISH COUNCIL MEETING will be held this Wednesday, January 14 at 6:30 PM.
