FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: Today we give thanks to God for one of his greatest gifts – the Eucharist, the true Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, in our midst. This presence is not merely symbolic but involves the complete change of the substance of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ, while the outward appearances (also called the “eucharistic species”) remain unchanged. We refer to this change as transubstantiation.

This wonderful transformation is brought about by the power of the Word of Christ and the action of the Holy Spirit during the Eucharistic celebration. As the priest pronounces the words of consecration, “This is my body” and “This is my blood,” the bread and wine are changed into the Body and Blood of Christ. The priest, in the role of Christ, pronounces these words, but their power and grace are God’s.

The Catholic Church teaches that the whole Christ is truly, really, and substantially contained in the Eucharist. “This presence is called ‘real’ – by which is not intended to exclude the other types of presence as if they could not be ‘real’ too, but because it is presence in the fullest sense: that is to say, it is a substantial presence by which Christ, God and man, makes himself wholly and entirely present” (CCC 1374).

Since the Last Supper, we Catholics have accepted and believed in this. The Eucharist was prefigured in the Old Testament (manna from Heaven), Its nature was very clearly explained by Jesus Himself (John, chapter 6), and Its presence was greatly honored since the apostolic times.  As Saint Paul writes: “Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself” (1 Cor 11:27-29).

Let us adore, honor and respect the Eucharist. Let us not receive Him, the Spotless Lamb of God, when we have a mortal sin on our soul. Let us always keep in mind Who is it that is coming to us in the Holy Communion and let us call upon our Blessed Mother to keep a proper disposition in our hearts as she was the first one to receive Jesus in her heart.

TODAY (JUNE 22) PROCESSION IN HONOR OF CORPUS CHRISTI: Please join us, after the Mass, for this outdoor procession (weather permitting). Thank you to all those who so diligently worked on preparing the church and the grounds for this great feast.

PRAYER BEFORE THE BLESSED SACRAMENT: My Lord Jesus Christ, for the love which You bear to men, You remain night and day in this Sacrament full of compassion and of love, awaiting, calling, and welcoming all who come to visit You. I believe that You are present in the Sacrament of the Altar: I adore You from the abyss of my nothingness, and I thank You for all the graces which You have bestowed upon me and in particular for having given me Yourself in this Sacrament, for having given me your holy Mother Mary for my advocate, and for having called me to visit You in this church (chapel).
