FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: Did Jesus really multiply loves and fish to feed the multitude? Yes, absolutely. Why am I asking this question? Because there are some interpretations out there that try to convince us that what really happened was not a miracle. In their opinion, Jesus preached to the crowd about caring and sharing and the crowd responded by bringing out food from under their robes that they had been hiding from each other. Once everyone learned how to share, there was plenty for everyone with twelve basketfuls left over. People may think of this reasoning as “deep insight,” but it is rather laughable and actually shows a lack of faith. If it were a custom of the day to carry food hidden beneath the clothes, Jesus would have known it and the disciples would not have asked Him for help. Plus, if the multiplication of the loaves and fish was meant to be a message about sharing and caring, why didn’t at least one gospel writer record words of Jesus on this occasion on the theme of sharing?

We do not need Jesus who cannot make miracles, but the One who does. The miracle of the multiplication shows that Jesus, who is the Son of God, is in control. He can make something out of nothing, as well as multiply the little into thousands of things. Jesus can and does continue to make similar miracles in our lives, when He takes our little faith and courage and multiplies it, enabling us to become great saints who are able to carry even the heaviest of the crosses.

PATRON SAINTS OF TRAVELERS (part 3): As a conclusion to this series, I just wanted to list the patron saints of travelers from the Eastern tradition. These are not the typical ones we are accustomed to invoke.

• Saint Jonah (Prophet): Associated with travel and safety due to his journey in the whale’s belly.
• Saint Nicholas of Myra (3^rd century): A very popular saint in the Eastern Churches, he is invoked as the patron saint of travelers and sailors primarily due to the legendary miracle in which he calmed a violent storm at sea, ensuring the safe arrival of terrified sailors.
• Saint Paul (1^st century): Because his life involved traveling thousands of miles on foot and by sea to spread the Gospel, he is sometimes associated with travel.

Additionally, Our Lady of Loreto is designated as the patron saint of all aviators and flight attendants, a title declared by Pope Benedict XV in 1920.  Her association with aviation stems from the legend that angels miraculously flew the Virgin Mary’s house from Palestine to Loreto, Italy.

ST. STEPHEN’S DAY PARISH FESTIVAL (August 16) is only two weeks away! I hope that many of you will come and join us for the Mass and fellowship in the commemorating St. Stephen.
