FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly was established in 2021 by Pope Francis, and the Church observes it every year on the fourth Sunday of July, close to the liturgical feast day of Saints Joachim and Anne (the grandparents of Jesus). The official motto for the 2026 celebration is a quote from the Book of Isaiah: “I will never forget you” (Isaiah 49:15).  In a message preceding the celebration, Pope Leo XIV emphasized that God’s faithful love never abandons anyone, even in the final stages of life, and that the frailty of old age does not render people useless.

PATRON SAINTS OF TRAVELERS (part 2): Last week I mentioned the patron saints of travelers.  It would be difficult to list every saint associated with this patronage as it varies by tradition and local customs, but here are the most prominent patron saints associated with travel and pilgrims:

• Saint Christopher (3^rd century): The primary patron saint of travelers, motorists, and pilgrims, known for the legend of carrying the Christ Child across a river.
• Saint Raphael the Archangel: In the Bible, in the Book of Tobit, he accompanied the young Tobiah on a long and dangerous journey from Nineveh to Media.
• Saint James the Greater (1^st century): The patron saint of pilgrims, specifically associated with the Camino de Santiago.
• Saint Roch (c. 1295–1327/1376), also known as Saint Rocco: A patron saint of pilgrims and those traveling during plagues.
• Saint Brendan the Navigator (c. 484 – c. 577): He is said to have made some voyages across the Atlantic. Venerated as a patron saint for sea voyages and exploration.
• Saint Benedict Joseph Labre (1748–1783): A famous vagabond pilgrim and patron saint of travelers and homeless people.
• Saint Gertrude of Nivelles (c. 626/628–659): She was renowned for her hospitality for the pilgrims and thus she became a patron saint of travelers and pilgrims.
• Saint Bridget of Sweden (c. 1303–1373): Known for her extensive pilgrimages and patronage of travelers.
• Saint Bona (c.  1156–1207): She served as a guide for pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land and Santiago de Compostela. In 1962 she was named the patron saint of flight attendants and tour guides.
• Saint Sebaldus (8^th century): Patron saint of pilgrims and travelers, particularly in Nuremberg.
