FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: Today’s gospel (Mt 13:24-43) presents three parables—the Weeds, the Mustard Seed, and the Leaven—that collectively describe the nature of the Kingdom of Heaven and the call to faithful discipleship. The Parable of the Weeds teaches that the world is a mixed field where God out of His mercy allows good and evil to coexist until the final harvest. He is urging us to trust in Divine Justice rather than attempting to exact vengeance and usurp His role as the final judge. He gives each one of us plenty of time to repent and turn our lives around. There have been many examples where even the most hardened sinners converted. This patience that God has, and we should emulate, is not indifference but a recognition that if we would want God to remove all the evil now, we too would fall under His judgment, as we are all sinners and have evil in our hearts as well. At the present time we want to call for God’s mercy and not for His judgment. In addition, this merciful attitude of God, and ours, does not mean that we should not name the evil around us and fight against it. It is just that we should do it as God, with merciful patience and not in a condemning way.
The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Leaven then shift the focus to the transformative power of faith. No matter how weak God may seem, He always conquers and has the power to transform us: a little faith in us He can turn into a deep, all enduring perseverance in faithfulness.
PATRON SAINTS OF TRAVELERS (part 1): During the summer months, the usual number of people who travel significantly increases. Many people take advantage of the summer break and warm weather to visit families and friends who may live farther away, become tourists or pilgrims who go sightseeing or visit beautiful shrines and churches, or just simply go somewhere else (usually an ocean or mountains) to relax and recharge. As people of faith, when we travel (no matter how long or short the drive is) we should always invoke the protection of God. When we pray, it is our custom not only to ask Jesus Christ directly, but also to approach Him through the Blessed Mother and other saints (Jesus likes to involve others in His work). Do you know how many patron saints we have connected with traveling? Quite a bit! Look for the list in the next week’s bulletin.
STEPHEN DAY PARISH FESTIVAL (August 16): We are in need of volunteers. We have in the back of the church signup sheet. If you are able to help with the food preparation and serving please talk to Marika Zsula. If you can assist with ticket sales, please talk to Ildikó Peller. In addition, help is needed with the set-up for the event (on Saturday and Sunday), clean-up assistance during and after the event.
