FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: On the 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A, we hear the Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:1-23). This Gospel passage focuses on God’s Word and how It can encounter different types of human hearts, represented by four soils: the path (hardened by cynicism), rocky ground (superficial faith), thorns (choked by worldly worries), and good soil (receptive hearts that produce spiritual fruit). Let us make sure that we are always that good soil. What do we have to do to be that type of soil? Not much, all we have to do is to say to the Lord: “your will be done” and mean it. It may seem at passive at first, but it is not. We very much have to be active with our intellect and will when we give consent to God, cooperate with Him, seek His will, endure suffering and cross. Those who think faith is something passive, usually grow lukewarm and may even lose the faith altogether. Yes, God is the initiator – after all, He is the Creator, the Redeemer, the Sanctifier – but He very much wants us actively respond to Him and produce fruits of the faith.
FRUITS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT: While St. Paul lists nine fruits in the original Greek text of Galatians 5:22-23, Catholic tradition recognizes twelve fruits, drawing from the Latin Vulgate translation. The twelve fruits of the Holy Spirit are: charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, chastity.
STEPHEN DAY PARISH PICNIC: Thank you to all those who came to the planning meeting for our St. Stephen Day Picnic this past week. It is a little over a month away (August 16), but the preparations have already begun. We are working on the promotional material now and the decision was made to add to this event a descriptor “Hungarian Festival” (while also indicating that it is on the occasion of the Feast of St. Stephen of Hungary). We think that this name better reflects the nature of this event and we hope that it will attract more passersby. We are also in need of volunteers. We have in the back of the church signup sheet. If you are able to help with the food preparation and serving please talk to Marika Zsula. If you can assist with ticket sales, please talk to Ildikó Peller. In addition, help is needed with the set-up for the event (on Saturday and Sunday), clean-up assistance during and after the event. We are a smaller community, so everyone who helps is truly needed and appreciated.
MASS SCHEDULE CHANGE: The 9AM Sunday Mass in English from St. Emeric has been moved to the Shrine of St. Elizabeth.
