FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) Today, on February 2nd, we celebrate the feast of the Presentation of the Lord. The presentation of the Lord Jesus (praesentatio Domini) in Jerusalem was already celebrated in the 4th century, at that time on February 14, since Christmas was celebrated on January 6. Since the celebration of the birth of Jesus was moved to December 25, the presentation of Jesus began to be celebrated on February 2.

Rome adopted this liturgical celebration in the 7th century, under the name hypapante (meeting) – referring to the meeting between Simeon and the baby Jesus – it was then that Jesus met humanity for the first time, the people for whom he was incarnated. From the 10th century, the liturgical books of the Western Church emphasized the purification of Mary more and more, and the holiday was named after it: purificatio. Then, in full accordance with the tradition of the Eastern Church, since 1960 we celebrate this day as the feast of the Lord, the presentation of our Lord.

In 1997, Pope John Paul II proclaimed February 2, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, the World Day of Consecrated Life. Since then, the Church has also celebrated on this day the almost one million men and women who live a consecrated life around the world. The purpose of the feast is to give thanks to God for the gifts of consecrated life, to promote knowledge and love of this way of life among the faithful, and to give those who live consecrated lives an opportunity to become aware of the beauty of their lives and the miracles that the Lord works in and through them for the Church and the world. Let us pray for those in consecrated life and their vocations! (source: Magyar Kurír).

(2) Next week, at the end of the Mass, as part of the final blessing, there will be a blessing for the married couples.

THE BLESSING OF ST. BLAISE: February 3rd is the feast-day of St. Blaise, bishop and martyr. He is invoked for the intercession in cases of sore throat and other ailments. We will offer the blessing after the Mass on this Sunday, February 2 and then also on his feast day, February 3.

MARGARET OF HUNGARY PRAYER GROUP: For the members of this group, there will be a commitment to offer few prayers for their own sanctification and also for some parish related intentions (some stable and some specific for that month). It will not be a sin, if you miss the prayers. But, I hope that this group will challenge us to be persevering in prayer and develop a sacrificial heart. The requirements are: (1) prayer to the Holy Spirit (I will provide the prayer), (2) praying at least two decades of a Rosary or a Divine Mercy Chaplet, (3) reading from the Bible for 5 minutes. The intentions that these prayers/sacrifices are to be offered are: (1) for growth in holiness, (2) for the return to the Faith of the fallen away Catholics, especially those from our parish, (3) for peace in the world. Please, call the rectory or email with your name to be signed up for this group. There will be no meetings.
