FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) A visiting priest will be celebrating the Saturday 5PM Mass on February 1. That afternoon I am concelebrating a wedding.
(2) The music for next Sunday’s Mass is provided by our Youth choir.
(3) This Sunday has been designated as the Sunday of the Word of God. The rationale is to be reminded of the importance of the Bible in the life of a Catholic. While we have Sacraments, where we truly encounter Jesus Christ, the Sacred Scriptures remain part of our Faith and serve indispensable role. How should a Catholic read the Bible?
(a) Choose a Catholic Bible (in other words, a Catholic edition): The Catholic Bible edition is the one where in the Old Testament there are extra 7 books: Tobit, Judith, Maccabees 1 and 2, Wisdom, the Book of Sirach, and Baruch. Additionally, Catholic Bibles also include further sections in the Books of Esther and Daniel. The Church, from the beginning of the formation of the Bible, has believed that these Old Testament books are part of the canon of Scripture, inspired by the Holy Spirit. The discrepancy stems from Martin Luther in the 16th century, who rejected these books (he even wanted to excise the Letter of James from the New Testament). Thus, Protestants do not include them in their editions. Some of the Catholic editions are: Douay-Rheims, Knox Bible, Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition, Jerusalem Bible, CTS New Catholic Bible, New American Bible Revised Edition, English Standard Version Catholic Edition. Often there are footnotes in the Bibles; please remember that these are not part of the Word of God.
(b) Read it with the Church: Bible does not interpret itself. That is why there are so many denominations that disagree on the meaning of certain passages in the Bible. God speaks to us through his Son, Jesus Christ, who teaches us through his Word and through the Tradition (what Jesus taught and is not recorded in the Bible – see, for example, Jn 20:30). It is only with the help of the Holy Spirit whom Jesus gave to the Church that we can authentically interpret the teachings of Christ. We call this Magisterium – the teaching office of the Church. Christ does not want us to be uncertain about His teaching.
A PRAYER BEFORE THE READING OF ANY PART OF THE HOLY SCRIPTURES: Come, O Holy Spirit, fill the hearts and minds of your faithful servants and inflame them with the fire of your Divine love. LET US PRAY. O God who by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit did instruct the hearts of your faithful servants grant us in the same Spirit to discern what is right and enjoy his comfort for ever. Through our Lord Jesus Christ who lives and reigns one God with you and the same Spirit world without end. Amen.
