MASS SCHEDULE & INTENTIONS FOR THE COMING WEEK:

FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) A happy St. Stephen Day to all of you and welcome to our St. Stephen Mass and Festival. St. Stephen of Hungary (c. 975-1038), the first Christian king of Hungary, is the principal patron of Hungary. A special welcome to Fr. András Mezei, who will be the homilist at the 11AM Mass today and to Mr. Bálint Bakondi from the Hungarian Chicago Consulate, who will be the speaker for afternoon’s commemoration of St. Stephen.

(2) If you go to the St. Stephen room (the northeast corner of our church), you will see a large mural on the wall: King St. Stephen dedicating the country to the Blessed Mother and asking for her protection (the image is also depicted on the cover of this bulletin). The mural was painted by W. A. Krusoe, a Hungarian artist, for the sanctuary of St. Emeric church. From 1944 till 1972 it was on the right hand side of the sanctuary wall. In 1972, after Fr. Karpi repainted the church, this masterpiece was moved to its current location.

The inspiration for the mural is the Legenda Hartviciana (c. 1097–1103). Hartvik was the Bishop of Győr from approximately 1097 to 1110. He was a prominent scholar and hagiographer under the Hungarian King Coloman the Book-lover, who asked him to compose an official hagiography of St. Stephen I of Hungary. Concerning the last day of St. Stephen, this is what we read there:

At last, by God’s mercy—and as a hundredfold reward—he was struck down by a fever, and when there was no longer any doubt that his death was imminent, he summoned the bishops and the nobles of his court who glorified the name of Christ; first, he discussed with them whom they should choose as king to succeed him. Then, in a fatherly manner, he exhorted them to preserve the true faith which they had received; to love righteousness, to cherish the bonds of heavenly love, to practice love, to cultivate humility, but above all to tend the tender saplings of Christianity. After these words, raising his hands and eyes to the stars, he cried out: “Queen of Heaven, illustrious Restorer of this world, in my final supplications I entrust the Holy Church, with its bishops and priests, and the country, with its people and lords, to your protection; having bid them a final farewell to God, I commend my soul into your hands (cf. Ps. 30:6).”

3) Please, visit the St. Stephen room, not only for the mural, but also for the replica of the Hungarian Crown and a display of pictures related to our parish life and history.

TEMPORARY MASS TIME CHANGE: Based on the experience of the last few years, whereby very few people came when we also had a Mass at the Scouts’ Day at the German Central Park, we will not have 11AM Mass here in the church on Sunday, September 6. There will still be a 9 AM Mass in English at the Shrine of St. Elizabeth of Hungary.

EUCHARISTIC PROCESSION: The Legion of Mary in the Diocese of Cleveland invites you to a traditional Eucharistic Procession on Saturday, September 5, 2026 at 11 AM at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Cleveland. The event begins with Holy Mass celebrated by Fr. Kyle Rosser, a Eucharistic procession through the streets of downtown Cleveland which will capture the feeling of what it would have been like to follow Jesus as His disciples did during His earthly life while praying a Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and returning to the Cathedral for the recitation of the Rosary, Benediction, and closing prayers. All are welcome to attend. Worship Aid is provided.
