FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) In today’s gospel we read how the identity of Jesus was revealed to Peter and the Apostles from above. They were the ones who received it, and were charged to guard it, and then, after Christ’s resurrection, to share it with the world. Therefore, to know the true identity, the true will of Jesus Christ, we need to remain in the Church that Christ established and built on Peter. The Catholic Church is the one who preserves and carries this message, this revelation from God, from one century to the next one. As Pope Benedict said in the book length interview called Ratzinger Report (1985), “Christianity is not a philosophical speculation; it is not a construction of our mind. Christianity is not ‘our’ work; it is a Revelation; it is a message that has been consigned to us, and we have no right to reconstruct it as we like or choose.” Consequently, we have an option to choose or decline the revelation of God through Jesus Christ, but we do not have the power to tweak it as we wish.

(2) Last week we commemorated the principal patron of Hungary, St. Stephen of Hungary, and held our annual St. Stephen’s Day Festival. Even though the weather was slightly warm and muggy, and had some rain as well, we were still able to gather in large numbers and enjoy the event and each other’s company. The food was delicious and the music in the hall (and outside) was pleasing. We welcomed Fr. András Mezei as our homilist at the Mass, Mr. Bálint Bakondi from the Hungarian Chicago Consulate as our speaker at the blessing of the bread, and we saw the performance of the scout folk dancing group, Regős. Thank you very, very much to everyone who helped in any way with the event of the day, with the organizing and running of the festival. We had probably our biggest crowd since Covid. Even though we cooked a bit more food than last year, by 3PM we were out. The profit for the church was $10,012 – a great success! The winner of the raffle ($220) was Tamas Csajka. Again, I appreciate everyone’s dedication to our parish.

(3) One of our volunteers, when she was outside cleaning a table during the festival, saw how one of the phases of the electrical power burned out just before it entered an electrical pole mounted distribution transformer. The transformer’s role is to convert high voltage electricity to lower, safe voltages for residential and commercial use. Unfortunately, the one missing phase caused undervoltage and phase imbalance, causing some of our equipment and their electronics to overheat and burn out. Our air-conditioning units were affected (3 out 7 have been damaged) and our bell system control system also became inoperative. We are hoping to have these repaired as soon as possible, but it may take as much as two weeks (the parts have been ordered). Please, have patience as our air-conditioning is functioning only at half capacity now.

(4) This Tuesday, August 25 at 6:30pm here at St. Emeric there will be an evaluative meeting about our St. Stephen festival. It is a good practice to see what we have done well and where we could possibly improve. Everyone is invited to come and share insights.

TEMPORARY MASS TIME CHANGE: Based on the experience of the last few years, whereby very few people came when we also had a Mass at the Scouts’ Day at the German Central Park, we will not have 11AM Mass here in the church on Sunday, September 6. There will still be a 9 AM Mass in English at the Shrine of St. Elizabeth of Hungary.

EUCHARISTIC PROCESSION: The Legion of Mary in the Diocese of Cleveland invites you to a traditional Eucharistic Procession on Saturday, September 5, 2026 at 11 AM at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Cleveland. The event begins with Holy Mass celebrated by Fr. Kyle Rosser, a Eucharistic procession through the streets of downtown Cleveland which will capture the feeling of what it would have been like to follow Jesus as His disciples did during His earthly life while praying a Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and returning to the Cathedral for the recitation of the Rosary, Benediction, and closing prayers. All are welcome to attend. Worship Aid is provided.
