FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) Today we will honor our Heavenly Mother and Queen by crowing her statue. I am grateful to all those who contributed to this pious custom of veneration either by preparation or participation. However, let us remember our Mother not just today, but every day of our lives. May the month of May be a time for us to strengthen our relationship with her. As Paul VI wrote in the encyclical Mense maio (Month of May): “Since Mary is rightly to be regarded as the way by which we are led to Christ, the person who encounters Mary cannot help but encounter Christ likewise. For what other reason do we continually turn to Mary except to seek the Christ in her arms, to seek our Savior in her, through her, and with her?” Mary, Mother of God, pray for us!
(2) József Cardinal Mindszenty wrote: “The most important person on earth is a mother. She cannot claim the honor of having built Notre Dame Cathedral. She need not. She has built something more magnificent than any cathedral—a dwelling for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection of her baby’s body. The angels have not been blessed with such a grace. They cannot share in God’s creative miracle to bring new saints to Heaven. Only a human mother can. Mothers are closer to God the Creator than any other creature; God joins forces with mothers in performing this act of creation. . . What on God’s good earth is more glorious than this; to be a mother?” Blessed Mother’s Day to all the mothers in our parish.
(3) The music for this Sunday’s Mass is provided by our Youth choir.
NOVENA TO THE HOLY SPIRIT FOR THE SEVEN GIFTS: The novena in honor of the Holy Spirit is the oldest of all novenas since it was first made at the direction of Our Lord Himself when He sent His apostles back to Jerusalem to await the coming of the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost. It is still the only novena officially prescribed by the Church. Addressed to the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity, it is a powerful plea for the light and strength and love so sorely needed by every Christian. This Novena begins on the day after the Solemnity of the Ascension, Friday of the 6th Week of Easter, even if the Solemnity of the Ascension is transferred to the 7th Sunday. I highly recommend praying this novena (even if we have a late start).
TWO PRAYERS TO THE HOLY SPIRIT:
“Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your love.”
“Heavenly King, Consoler Spirit, Spirit of Truth, present everywhere and filling all things, treasure of all good and source of all life, come dwell in us, cleanse and save us, you who are All Good.”
