FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) Today the liturgy presents to us the parable of the King’s invitation to the wedding feast of his son and the requirement of the wedding garment. In Catholic understanding, the wedding garment is interpreted as sanctifying grace and charity, representing the inner transformation required to enter God’s kingdom. While the King provides the invitation freely to all, wearing the garment signifies a soul clothed in righteousness through faith, repentance, and works of love. The guest expelled for lacking this attire symbolizes a person who accepts the call to salvation but remains in a state of unrepentant sin or spiritual pride. This parable warns against the sin of presumption, emphasizing that mere outward affiliation with the Church is insufficient without an interior life grounded in grace and charity.
(2) Two and a half weeks ago Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen (1895–1979) was beatified. He was a pioneering American Catholic media personality and theologian who served as an auxiliary bishop of New York (for 16 years he was also the National Director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith in the United States) and then Bishop of Rochester (1966-1969). In 1969 he was named titular Archbishop of Newport, Wales. He gained global fame for his radio and television programs, most notably Life Is Worth Living, which attracted millions of viewers and won an Emmy Award, making him one of the most influential Catholic figures of the 20th century.
The significance of his beatification on September 24, 2026, lies in the fact that he is the first American-born bishop to be declared “Blessed” by the Catholic Church, moving him one step closer to sainthood. The miracle recognized by the Holy See, as attributed to his intercession, was the unexplained survival of newborn James Fulton Engstrom, who had no pulse for 61 minutes at birth. Upon beatification, Sheen was assigned a feast day of December 9, the anniversary of his death.
(3) This week I will be away again. This time it is a canon law conference. Because of this, we will have an early Mass (7AM) on Monday and no morning Masses Tuesday through Thursday.
ALL SAINTS (November 1): This year the feast of the All Saints will fall on a Sunday. I would like to invite children to dress as some saint and be part of the procession at the Mass. After the Mass, we will gather downstairs for some refreshments and we will have a chance to guess which saints the children were portraying.
ROSARY: In the month of October, which is dedicated to the Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, I would like us to pray communally the Rosary before the 11AM Mass on the Sundays of October. We would start at 10:25am and finish in roughly 25 minutes, which would still give some 10 minutes of silence before the Mass. If you come after 10:25, please feel free to join us in this prayer. Even the few decades of the rosary are worth praying.
OUR PATRONAL FEASTDAYS: On November 8, we will celebrate St. Emeric and on November 22, we will honor St. Elizabeth of Hungary. Details to follow.
SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL ANNUAL BLANKET SUNDAY (October 4): Please consider a monetary donation, which will help purchase blankets, beds, and other winter essentials for those in need. All money raised stays in NE Ohio. Please visit BlanketSunday.org for more information and to donate. You may also use the special envelopes in the vestibule. Thank you!
