FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) Today’s gospel passage features the parable of the two sons. A father asks his two sons to work in the vineyard; the first refuses but later repents and goes, while the second agrees but does not go. Jesus uses this parable to illustrate for us the true obedience to God: it is not necessarily about words (they are easy to utter), but about accepting and fulfilling His will. This is the foundation of our relationship with Him. No one can progress in the love of God without being obedient to His commandments. Obedience is ranked as the greatest of the moral virtues because it yields the human will, the most personal possession, to God. We cannot give a better and more personal gift to God than our very own selves.

The practice of the virtue of obedience is built on the humble recognition of God’s authority over us. In other words, we recognize the God’s rule over us, over the whole created universe. But God is not just a faceless and abstract reality. He visibly entered our world in the incarnation of His Son who is now for us the way, the truth and the life. We go to God the Father through Jesus. That is why Christ’s teaching and commandments as preserved by the Church are not an optional matter. What is interesting that even though Jesus Christ is our God, while here on earth in the body, He subjected Himself to the will of the Father and to the proper authorities: his parents when growing up and civic rules (e.g., when paying taxes). This speaks of His great humility. Jesus’ subjection to the Father is not the same as our subjection to Him, of course, but we are called to imitate His obedience, nonetheless.

All the other authorities in the world, whether ecclesial or civil, have authority from God and we are asked to submit to them. However, there are some limits in the obedience to these authorities. (a) An authority is to be disobeyed, if it is asking us to commit sin. For example, a government’s laws forcing companies to include coverage for abortion in their health insurance plans is morally wrong and should not be followed. (b) Also, an authority does not have power to extend its reach beyond its area of competence. For instance, a boss cannot mandate his employees to go on vacation only to this one specific place.

(2) Every October, parishes across the diocese obtain a head count at all Sunday Masses in order to determine how many parishioners attend weekend Masses. The annual Mass attendance count is intended to provide a comprehensive profile of the diocese and help the individual parishes with their planning and ministry. The two weekends designated for this purpose are: October 3-4 and October 10-11.

ROSARY: In the month of October, which is dedicated to the Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, I would like us to pray communally the Rosary before the 11AM Mass on the Sundays of October. We would start at 10:25am and finish in roughly 25 minutes, which would still give some 10 minutes of silence before the Mass. If you come after 10:25, please feel free to join us in this prayer. Even the few decades of the rosary are worth praying.

Anyone who missed that lecture or would like to hear a pre-recorded, expanded version of it can do so through the upcoming Hungarian Heritage Expo, a free virtual event featuring many different presentations on Hungarian topics in the English language.
