FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) This week begins the Holy Season of Lent with Ash Wednesday on March 5. There will be two Masses: 9 am (language based on those present) and 6 pm (in Hungarian). Also, we will pray the Stations of the Cross at 10:30am before Sunday Mass.
(2) Do you already know what will you give up for Lent? The season of Lent with its self-sacrificing message is well known even among the non-believers. For some reason, many people, even if they forget a lot about the Catholic Faith and its practices, never seem to forget the meatless Fridays of Lent and making of a sacrifice during this special season. In addition, the idea of sacrificing ourselves touches the human heart in a very special way (even if they themselves may fall short of it). That is the reason, the many novels, movies, or comics would incorporate it into their stories. The society in general implicitly recognizes the great value of sacrifice as we honor those who put their lives on the line.
However, for us Catholics, the self-sacrifice should not have only a natural appeal. It needs to be motivated by supernatural reasons: the example of our Lord Jesus Christ. All of us need to recognize the great love of God in the actions of our Merciful Savior. Motivation to give up ourselves should be rooted in the call of Jesus Christ to follow Him. We need to respond to the great self-sacrificing love of God with a self-sacrificing love of our hearts.
So what will you give up? Sometimes we hear people say, I gave up swearing (or insert another sinful habit) for Lent. However, we should always give up sin, not just in Lent. When we speak of giving up something, it refers to something inherently good thing (food, desserts, hobbies, personal time [in order to devote it to more prayers or helping others]…). Both young and the old can make meaningful sacrifices. This practice will teach us to look beyond ourselves: first to God and then to others; and to acquire a selfless heart, like Jesus. So, let us think now what we want to do during Lent, so that when the Ash Wednesday arrives, we would hit the ground running.
A Review of Lenten Regulations for Latin Catholics: 1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of abstinence from meat and also days of fast, that is, only one full meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. 2. All Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence from meat. 3. The obligation to abstain from meat commences at 14 years old. 4. The obligation to fast commences at 18 years of age and ends at 59 years of age.
EMERIC ALTAR GUILD will hold its annual meeting next week on Sunday March 9, after the 11AM Mass. All the ladies of the parish are invited to consider membership in this organization.
