FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: Today we celebrate the feast of King St. Stephen, the patron saint of Hungary. With the permission of the diocese, we can also liturgically commemorate the founder of the Christian Hungarian state. St. Stephen is one of the most influential figures in Hungarian history, and much could be written about his accomplishments. One of his works is Admonitions (also known as King Stephen’s admonitions to his son Prince Emeric). It was written around 1020 and the work has been revered for centuries as the foundation of the Hungarian historical constitution. In fact, it was always listed as the first law of the Corpus Juris Hungarici. It has ten short chapters and in this column, I would like to share with you the first chapter that deals with the preservation of the Catholic faith.

“Since the rank of royal dignity can only be attained by believers and those who profess the Catholic faith, in our governing we place the sacred faith first. My dearest son, if you desire to honor the royal crown, I advise, I counsel, I urge you above all things to maintain the Catholic and apostolic faith with such diligence and care that you may be an example for all those placed under you by God and that all the clergy may rightly call you a man of true Christian confession. Failing to do this, it is certain that you will not be known as a Christian or a son of the Church. For those who believe falsehood, or do not complete or adorn the faith with good works, will neither rule here on earth fairly, nor will they have eternal dominion or crown, for faith dies in the absence of deeds. But, if you hold the shield of faith, you also have the helmet of salvation. Because with these spiritual weapons you can properly fight against your invisible and visible enemies. For the apostle says, ‘Only he who fights according to the rules will win the wreath of victory.’ So the faith I am talking about is this: Believe firmly in the Almighty Father, the Creator of all creatures, and in His only begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who was announced by the angel, who was born of the Virgin Mary, who suffered on the cross for the salvation of the whole world, and in the Holy Spirit, who spoke through the words of the prophets and the apostles, and of the evangelists, as in one perfect indivisible and spotless Deity; and do not doubt. ‘This is the Catholic faith in which, – as Athanasius says, – if anyone does not believe faithfully and strongly, he is not saved.’ If you will ever have under your rule – may it never happen! – those who are trying to divide or diminish or enlarge the Trinity thus united, know: they are the servants of the chieftain of heresy, not the sons of the Holy Church. And do not support or defend them, lest you appear to be an enemy and an avenger. Because such people miserably ruin and scatter the people of the Holy Church. Be especially attentive that this doesn’t happen.”

EUCHARISTIC PROCESSION: Legion of Mary Cleveland West Comitium invites you to attend Holy Mass and participate in a traditional Eucharistic Procession on Saturday September 4, 2021. The Mass will be at 11:00 AM and the procession will begin at 12:00 PM at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in downtown Cleveland. The Cathedral is located at 1007 Superior Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44114. The (less than one mile in distance) procession will be through the sidewalks of downtown Cleveland, as we walk, pray, and sing in honor of our Eucharistic Lord Jesus and Our Lady, the Blessed Virgin Mary. The event includes Holy Mass with Father Kevin Estabrook, our Legion of Mary Comitium Spiritual Director, a procession with hymns, and a return to the Cathedral for the recitation of the Rosary and closing prayers.
