FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) This week I will not be here for two days. Therefore, there will not be 9AM morning Mass on Tuesday and Wednesday. In case of pastoral emergency, please call your nearby parish.
(2) The music for today’s 11AM Sunday Mass is provided by our Youth choir.
(3) Thank you to everyone who assisted with last week’s Mass and Dinner at the Shrine of St. Elizabeth. Your help is truly appreciated. The general consul from Chicago was present as we remembered and honored the alumni of St. Elizabeth School.
(4) We were able to acquire quality refrigerator magnets with the pictures of our church. Please stop by the gift shop (bazaar) to see these beautiful magnets. They can make for some nice gifts or souvenirs. The proceeds of the sale will go to the maintenance and beautification of our church.
ELECTION OF A NEW POPE: After the burial of Pope Francis, the cardinals (and especially the cardinal electors) are preparing to elect a new pope. The conclave will begin on May 7. Please, pray for the cardinals so that they would humbly obey the promptings of the Holy Spirit and have the good of the Church on their mind. A sample prayer is printed below.
There is a widespread notion that the Holy Spirit directly chooses the pope. The Church does not teach that position. According to the laws of the Church, the Cardinals choose the pope while praying for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Pope Benedict XVI, while still Cardinal Ratzinger, was asked by Bavarian television in 1997 if the Holy Spirit is responsible for the election of a pope. His answer was:
“I would not say so, in the sense that the Holy Spirit picks out the Pope. . . . I would say that the Spirit does not exactly take control of the affair, but rather like a good educator, as it were, leaves us much space, much freedom, without entirely abandoning us. Thus the Spirit’s role should be understood in a much more elastic sense, not that he dictates the candidate for whom one must vote. . . . There are too many contrary instances of popes the Holy Spirit obviously would not have picked!”
PRAYER FOR THE ELECTION OF A NEW POPE: O God, eternal shepherd, who govern your flock with unfailing care, grant in your boundless fatherly love a pastor for your Church who will please you by his holiness and to us show watchful care. Through Christ our Lord, amen (Roman Missal).
ROSARY: In the month of May, which is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, I would like us to pray communally the Rosary on the Sundays of the month before the Mass. We would start at 10:25am and finish in roughly 25 minutes.
