FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: We are now in a weeklong heat wave and already on the first day the record for that day was broken: 96°F (35.5°C). In order to survive in hot and humid conditions, we need to stay hydrated and, when lack of rain is accompanying the hot temperatures, we need to keep an eye on our garden and water it as well.

In the Catholic tradition, we also have the expression “watering the soul” and it is a metaphor for nurturing and rejuvenating our spiritual lives. The concept is rooted in the awareness that our souls are like parched gardens that need regular watering to remain healthy and flourishing. Going into the summer when our schedules and itineraries change (but not only then), it is important not to forget this essential duty of ours. What are the ways we can “water our souls”?

1) Confession and forgiveness are essential for watering our souls. By confessing our sins to Jesus Christ in the sacrament of reconciliation and asking for forgiveness, we can experience spiritual refreshment and renewal. Sins (whether intentional or not) are huge destroyers of the life of grace in us. Let’s get rid of them.

2) Through prayer, we not only express our thoughts and desires to God, but also seek His guidance and wisdom. In prayer, we also render him our dues when we adore Him and praise Him. By meditating on the words of the Scriptures or His presence in the Eucharist, we grow in our understating of God’s presence in our lives and we learn to quiet our minds and hearts so that we can focus on what matters the most in life.

3) Faithful practice of the Faith (no matter where we are) cements in us the life of grace and makes us stronger in withstanding the attacks of the world and the devil.

4) Finally, serving others and practicing charity are key ways to “water” our souls. When we serve others, we are reflecting God’s love and compassion, and we are nourishing our own souls in the process.

To spiritually survive we must constantly water our souls. It requires effort and intention, but it is a journey that is richly rewarding. By seeking forgiveness, praying, receiving the sacraments, practicing the faith, and serving others, we can nourish our souls and grow in holiness.

PLANNING MEETING – ST. STEPHEN DAY PARISH PICNIC: On Sunday, August 18 we will hold our St. Stephen Day Parish Picnic. The format will closely follow what we did in the last two years. Thank you very much to all of you who so devotedly volunteer for the events and work at St. Emeric parish.
