FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: This week is the anniversary of the consecration of the current church of the Shrine of St. Elizabeth (February 19, 1922). The liturgical reforms of 1970, introduced a change in terminology, which may be confusing to some. Prior to the reforms, the liturgical books spoke of a consecration of a church or its blessing (solemn or simple), consecration being the highest form of the ritual. Now, the word consecration is replaced with dedication and only one form of blessing is recognized. In spite of this, in the ecclesiastical usage we still use the word consecrated as a synonym for the word dedicated.
Recently, I came across an interesting historical information in regard the dedication (consecration) vs. blessing. It seems that in the Eastern U.S.(and some other places as well), the distinction was utilized in those cases when a parish would take out a mortgage in a secular bank in order to finance the building of its church. Once the church was built, the civil title was held by the lending institution until the mortgage was paid, which could take upward of 30 years or more. What happened then is that the church was only blessed upon completion of the building project and then consecrated once the mortgage was paid. This was rooted in canonical principles that the consecration could only take place when there was no doubt that the building could be permanently used for the purpose of a church. As this was guaranteed only after the building was substantially debt-free, the consecration would often take place many years after the building was complete and in regular use.
Opening Prayer (Collect) of the Mass on the anniversary of the dedication: “O God, who year by year renew for us the day when this your holy temple was consecrated, hear the prayers of your people and grant that in this place for you there may always be pure worship and for us, fullness of redemption.”
