FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) Prior to the liturgical reforms of 1970, a separate liturgical season called Passiontide began with the fifth Sunday in Lent and lasted until the Holy Saturday. Interestingly, this day has acquired several names. First, it was called Passion Sunday (later First Passion Sunday) as the liturgy began to focus on the passion narrative of our Lord Jesus Christ. Since this was the day the cross and the statues with a black (and later purple) cloth were veiled, it acquired also the name Black Sunday, especially in Central Europe, where people often came to church in black clothes as well. Since the Mass begins with the antiphon Iudica me (Judge me) it was also called Judica Sunday. Finally, in some places it was called Death Sunday, because in the liturgy the passage was read where the enemies of Christ decided on His death.

(2) Thank you to all of you who helped this past Friday with the cleaning of the church. I appreciate your dedication to our parish.

A Review of Lenten Regulations for Latin Catholics: 1. Good Friday is a day of abstinence from meat and also a day of fast, that is, only one full meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. 2. All Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence from meat. 3. The obligation to abstain from meat commences at 14 years old. 4. The obligation to fast commences at 18 years of age and ends at 59 years of age.

CONFESSIONS: In preparation for Easter, before the Sunday Mass, even during the Stations of the Cross, I will be hearing confessions 10:20–10:50AM in the Infant Jesus of Prague classroom (to the left of the sanctuary, that is the side of the Market parking lot).

LEARNING ABOUT MASS: We will continue the Bp. Kornél Fábry series on the Mass, today, April 6. As we did it the last time, after 11AM Mass in our hall, we will watch a short video, followed by my comments and Q&A. The plan is to keep it under half an hour. All of you are invited. This program is in Hungarian. The next meeting will be in one week, on April 13.

HOMEBOUND PARISHIONERS, who at this Lent/Easter time would like to receive the sacrament of confession and Eucharist, or possibly also anointing of the sick, please call the rectory at 216-965-0061 to schedule a mutually agreeable time. Thank you.

PALM BRANCHES FROM LAST YEAR: The palms received on Palm Sunday are blessed. If we no longer wish them to have displayed or kept in our homes, they should be either burned or buried in the ground. If you would like to dispose of the old palm branches, please bring them to the church by April 16.
