FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) With the First Sunday of Advent we not only commence a new liturgical season, but also begin a new liturgical year. The name for this season comes from the Latin word adveniens, which means coming. At this time joy fills our hearts at the thought of Jesus’ first coming at Christmas, we are encouraged to look forward to his second coming, and, as St. Bernard of Clairvaux writes, there is a third coming between these two:
“The third is invisible, while the other two are visible. … Because this coming lies between the other two, it is like a road on which we travel from the first coming to the last. In the first, Christ was our redemption; in the last, he will appear as our life; in this middle coming, he is our rest and consolation.”
Our Lord comes to us in the Sacraments, in His Word, and through his many gifts of grace He indeed provides for us bountifully.
The decorations in the church have changed: the purple color is highlighted. The purple color symbolizes the fact that Advent is a season of preparation. Similar to Lent, we are to look into our hearts and repent of our sins so as to prepare a worthy heart for the coming of Christ. Actually, in this context we can thus speak of a fourth coming in this season: our coming back or coming closer to Christ. Truly, Advent is not a passive season, but an active one.
(2) The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the most important Marian feasts of the liturgical calendar. This year, December 8 falls on the Second Sunday of Advent, which takes liturgical precedence over the feast of the Immaculate Conception. Whenever this happens, due to its importance, this Marian feast is moved to Monday (December 9). In response to a recent inquiry from the U.S. bishops, the Holy See has stated that the obligation to attend Mass for the Immaculate Conception is transferred along with its liturgical celebration to Monday. This marks a new interpretation of Church law, meaning that the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, even when it falls on December 9, is always a holy day of obligation. Please, note that we will have to attend two Masses for the fulfillment of these two obligations (Sunday and the Immaculate Conception). On Monday, December 9, we will have three Masses that day (morning, noon and the evening).
(3) Thank you very much for the surprise celebration of my birthday. I appreciate your wishes, prayers, kindness and generosity. I keep you all in my prayers.
