FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: Last week I spoke about the Real Presence of Christ. Today, I would like to speak about another key aspect of the Eucharist: the sacrificial nature of the Eucharist. This Most Holy Sacrament is not just some type of remembrance (or reenactment) of Christ’s suffering, but during its celebration it makes present the one sacrifice of Christ. The sacrifice of Christ is not repeated. Rather, as the Catechism of the Catholic Church (#1367) explains, “the sacrifice of Christ and the sacrifice of the Eucharist are one single sacrifice: ‘The victim is one and the same: the same now offers through the ministry of priests, who then offered himself on the cross; only the manner of offering is different.’ … ‘And since in this divine sacrifice which is celebrated in the Mass, the same Christ who offered himself once in a bloody manner on the altar of the cross is contained and is offered in an unbloody manner. . . this sacrifice is truly propitiatory” (reference to: Council of Trent (1562) Doctrina de ss. Missae sacrificio, c. 2: DS 1743; cf. Heb 9:14,27).
The word propitiatory means that the Mass is a true sacrifice offered to God to appease His wrath and forgive sins (the two aspects of reconciliation with God). This occurs in several different ways. (1) Through the Mass, God’s mercy makes reparation for the want of divine love that we have shown by committing sin. (2) Through the Mass, God’s mercy removes the guilt of repented venial sins and moves the sinner estranged from Him to return to God. (3) Through the Mass, God’s mercy remits more or less of the punishment still due on earth to forgiven sins. (4) Through the Mass, God’s mercy also remits more or less of the punishment which the souls in purgatory have to undergo before entering heaven.
HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION: On August 15, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven is the bodily taking up of the Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her earthly life. This solemnity is a Holy Day of Obligation, meaning that we are required to attend Mass. I know that many of you will probably attend near your workplace or your home, but here at St. Emeric we will have the following schedule: on Wednesday evening at 6:00PM the Mass will be in English, on Thursday at 9AM, 12Noon (the language depends on those present), and at 6:00PM (in Hungarian). I have highlighted the schedule for this solemnity in the above box.
AUG. 11 (beginning at Noon): TLM community at the Shrine of St. Elizabeth is inviting the former parishioners of St. Elizabeth parish to join them at a potluck picnic at the pavilion of the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes.
NEXT SUNDAY – ST. STEPHEN PICNIC: Our St. Stephen Picnic will be on August 18. Come, bring your neighbors, friends for a wonderful (Hungarian) culinary experience. Proceeds benefit the parish. Mass of St. Stephen will be at 11:00AM (in Hungarian), picnic food from 12:30-4PM. (Hungarian style sausage; stuffed cabbage; venison gulyás; tomato, pepper & onion stew (lecsó); lángos (elephant ear); cabbage & noodles; assorted pastries; coffee; children menu: hotdogs, chips, ice-cream treats). The traditional blessing of bread at 1PM, music throughout, dance presentation… No need to RSVP. Those of you who would like to help with the event in some fashion, please call Marika Zsula (216-212-5225) or Louis Zsula (216-213-7928). Thank you very much.
