FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) Christ is risen! I pray that you and your loved ones have a blessed Easter! In 2022, in this column, I wrote about peacocks as a symbol of Resurrection and Eternal Life. Another, more common symbol is the Easter lily (lilum longiflorum). This majestic white flower, with its trumpet-like shape and sweet scent, is as much a symbol of Easter as any other. The Easter lily has a fascinating history. Native to Taiwan and the Ryukyu islands off the coast of Japan, it quickly became a prized European decorative plant in the 1700s, as Portuguese and Spanish sailors arrived in the area. But the true rise of the Easter lily in the West began after the World War I. There are four symbolic allusions in this flower. First, the Easter lily blooms purely white – a color heavily associated with purity and holiness; thus it reminds us of Jesus Christ and His unmatched holiness. Secondly, the flower’s trumpet shape symbolizes a herald announcing Christ’s resurrection. But the very way a lily grows is symbolic as well: From a dormant bulb buried in the earth, a beautiful and vibrantly alive flower emerges, mirroring the story of Jesus rising from the tomb. Finally, the Easter lily produces a sweet fragrance that fills churches and homes during the Easter season, reminding us of the sweet and comforting presence of God (Source: aleteia.org, modified).
(2) As you could see below on April 27th, we will not have our 11AM Mass here at St. Emeric, but it will be held at the Shrine of St. Elizabeth at 11:30AM. I hope that many of you will join us also for the meal afterwards.
(3) On Holy Thursday, our church was open from 8-11PM for those who wanted to visit seven churches and pray before the Blessed Sacrament at the Altar of Repose. We had a little more than 400 people, mostly young, who stopped that evening/night by our church.
HEARTFELT THANKS to all the dedicated volunteers who helped in preparing for the Easter celebration – the liturgical music and singing, assisting in the liturgy, decorating the church, acquiring the flowers, mail and electronic publicity, cleaning, and inside and outside beautification of our church and the surrounding grounds. May God reward you abundantly!
THE NEXT SUNDAY IS DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY: Our Lord’s promise to grant complete forgiveness of sins & punishment on the Feast of Mercy is recorded three times in St. Faustina’s Diary: Divine Mercy in My Soul.
