FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) Today we celebrate the 63rd World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Pope Paul VI established the day in 1964, during the Second Vatican Council, in response to a declining number of men entering seminaries and women entering convents. With this act Paul VI wanted to publicly fulfill Jesus’ command to “pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest” (Mt 9:38).  It is celebrated annually on the Fourth Sunday of Easter, also known as Good Shepherd Sunday, when the Gospel of the Good Shepherd is read at Mass. It is a custom for the Pope, as Bishop of Rome, to have ordinations on this day. This year Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to ordain eight men to the priesthood in Rome.

(2) I know that we are a small parish and statistically it is less likely that some vocations would come from our parish (although we never know!). However, we can still contribute mightily by truly praying every day for vocations. Zealous prayers do make a difference in the world. Below are a couple of prayers we can use:

(A): Prayer for Vocations: Loving Father, you sent your Son so that all might come to know the truth and be saved. With the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, you continue his work through the Church. Your Son reminded his disciples that the harvest was indeed plentiful but the laborers few. Following his instructions, we beg you to call many to ordained ministry and religious life. Grant them the grace to hear you and to respond wholeheartedly. May Mary Immaculate, the mother of your Son, intercede for us. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

 (B) Paul VI’s Prayer on the First World Day of Prayer for Vocations: O Jesus, Divine Shepherd of Souls, who called the Apostles to become fishers of men, now call the ardent and generous hearts of our youth to make them Your followers and ministers. Let them share your thirst for that universal redemption for which you daily renew Your sacrifice upon the altar. O Lord Jesus, “always living to make intercession for us,” extend our horizons to the entire world, where so many brethren make silent supplication for the light of truth and the warmth of love, so that answering Your call, many young men may prolong here Your mission, edify your Mystical Body, the Church, and become “the salt of the earth and the light of the world.” Extend, O Lord, Your loving call to many pure and generous-hearted young women, that they may grow in their desire for evangelical perfection and may dedicate themselves to the service of the Church and their neighbors who so desperately need such assistance and charity. Amen (April 11, 1964)

THANK YOU to everyone who assisted with last week’s Mass and Dinner at the Shrine of St. Elizabeth as we remembered and honored the alumni of St. Elizabeth School. Your help is truly appreciated.

TODAY: AGAPE MEAL AND PARISH-WIDE MEETING: After the 11AM Mass on April 26, we will have an agapé meal, during which I would like to receive feedback from you on a proposed change to our Mass schedule.

NEXT WEEK: MAY 3, MAY CROWNING: We will honor our Heavenly Mother on the first Sunday of the month of May. We invite the children to participate in this joyous event, if they would like, and come dressed in their Sunday best, girls preferably in white or pastel dresses. A meeting for the children to go over the details will be 15 minutes before the Mass on Sunday, May 3.
