FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost. It is celebrated fifty days after Easter, marking the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, Mary, and other followers of Jesus in Jerusalem.  This event is considered the birthday of the Church, the manifestation of the Church to the world, and the beginning of her global evangelizing mission.

The feast has deep roots in the Jewish Feast of Weeks (Shavuot), which was celebrated 50 days after the Passover. It originally celebrated the wheat harvest (part of the first-fruits celebrations) and later commemorated the giving of the Law to Moses. Christians view Pentecost as the fulfillment of this Old Testament pattern, where (A) Mary and the Apostles are the first fruits of Christ’s mission here on earth; and (B) the New Covenant is established not by law written on stone, but by the Spirit of God given to the Church that helps and guides her in preserving the teachings and laws given by Jesus Christ.

The key aspects of the celebration include:

  • Reversal of Babel: The gift of tongues allowed people of different languages to understand the Gospel, symbolizing unity and the overcoming of confusion.
  • Transformation: The Holy Spirit empowered fearful disciples to become courageous witnesses, transforming them into agents of change.
  • Liturgical Significance: It concludes the Easter season and is ranked among the greatest feasts of Christianity, alongside Christmas and Easter.

(2) Today, after the 11AM Mass all of you are invited to our hall to celebrate the Church’s birthday with a cake. In addition, at this celebration we will have a brief catechetical session (in Hungarian).

(3) ROSARY: in the month of May on the Sundays before the 11AM Mass at 10:25am.

PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT FOR THE SEVEN GIFTS: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created, and you shall renew the face of the earth. Let us pray. O God, who have taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant that in the same Spirit we may be truly wise and ever rejoice in his consolation. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
