FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: Trinity Sunday (officially the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity) is celebrated in the Western Catholic liturgical calendar on the first Sunday after Pentecost, occurring eight weeks after Easter. No specific feast existed in the early Church, though the Trinity was honored implicitly in every Mass. In response to the Arian heresy (which denied Christ’s full divinity), the Church began to develop special liturgical texts in honor of the Trinity to reaffirm the belief. However, these texts were used at various times of the year and there was no specific date in the calendar at this time dedicated solely to the mystery of the Holy Trinity. By the 8th and 9th centuries, local feasts emerged, particularly in France and Germany, often promoted by Benedictine monks and theologians. These customs grew and spread and in 1334 Pope John XXII formally established the feast as a universal obligation for the entire Latin Church. He placed it on the Sunday after Pentecost to reflect on the full mystery of God after the gift of the Holy Spirit. The feast was elevated to a first-class solemnity by Pope Pius X in 1911 and in the 1970 liturgical reforms it was reaffirmed as a solemnity.

MASS SCHEDULE CHANGE: As you may have heard, the Institute of Christ the King the Sovereign Priest (ICKSP) has decided to leave our Shrine of St. Elizabeth of Hungary. They will depart from the shrine on June 1 and the lease agreement with them will be terminated. This change necessitates a Mass schedule adjustment for us. As you know, the shrine is part of St. Emeric parish and is a key historical church for Hungarian Catholics in US.

After consultation and considering several alternatives, I have decided to move the 9AM Sunday Mass in English from St. Emeric to St. Elizabeth. The last 9AM Mass here at St. Emeric will be on June 7 and the 9AM Mass at the shrine will start on June 28 and, like here at St. Emeric, it will be in English. Please, note the two-week hiatus in this transition. The reasons behind this decision were the following: a) I did not want to separate the Hungarian community. I very much enjoyed seeing all of us together at the 11AM Mass; b) Before the coming of the ICKSP, this was our schedule from 2018 on and therefore this is not something new. In a sense we are returning to an earlier schedule; c) with the exception of one church, no other nearby parishes offer 9AM Mass and thus the shrine can provide an alternative. This is a temporary decision and after some time, I will evaluate it and see if we need to make modifications to this schedule. We will also hold, as we have been in the past, bilingual Masses at 11AM at the shrine on some occasions. I wish ICKSP and their community all the best.

PRAY THE ROSARY: even if today is our last communal rosary prayer (before the 11AM Mass at 10:25am), let us not forget to pray it on our own, if possible every day.

WELCOME TO EVERYONE who is participating in our TRADITIONAL CHICKEN PAPRIKASH LUNCHEON: We appreciate your presence and support of our church. This year, the proceeds of this dinner will be used for the repairs of our organ. Additional donations for this cause are also most welcome.

NEXT WEEK (JUNE 7) IS THE FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI: We will hold our traditional outdoor procession, weather permitting. I would like to thank those who had decorated the outdoor altars in the past and would like to ask them, if they can, to continue this beautiful service. If you have flower petals, please bring them for extra decoration on the ground. I also ask the children to participate by wearing their white dresses, and to scatter the flower petals in front of the Blessed Sacrament in the procession.

LAST WEEKEND’S COLLECTION: Sunday Collection: $1,144; Ascension: $10; Maintenance: $60; Boiler cost offset: $25; in loving memory of Árpád Dobolyi: $100. May God reward your generosity in supporting the church. Thank you for sending in your donations by mail or using our website https://stemeric.com/donations/.

PLEASE PRAY FOR THE SICK, especially for Bev Kimar, Teréz Kalász, Lajos Boday, Márta Takács, Kathy Szabó, Alex Szaday, Virginia Kachmar, Margaret Falk, Mária Hokky, Éva Fricke, Balázs Bedy and Deven Poroszlai.

LET US PRAY THREE HAIL MARYS FOR OUR PARISH EVERY DAY!
