FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: Everything that the Church teaches was present with her from the very beginning, but faith and understanding about certain matters deepened over time (not changed!). Such is the case of the Church’s faith in the Eucharist. Jesus literally meant His words when He said that He is the true food and given over to us for nourishment. If Jesus meant it as a symbolic image, why did He never correct the understanding of those who scoffed at Him, were scandalized by His words, or they left Him? An early witness of the fact that the Apostles handed down this understanding of the Eucharist was St. Ignatius of Antioch (†107) who wrote:

Take note of those who hold heterodox opinions on the grace of Jesus Christ which has come to us, and see how contrary their opinions are to the mind of God.  They abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer because they do not confess that the Eucharist is the flesh of our Savior Jesus Christ, flesh which suffered for our sins and which that Father, in his goodness, raised up again. They who deny the gift of God are perishing in their disputes (Letter to the Smyrnaeans 6:2–7:1).

The further heresies in the following centuries has forced the Church to clarify this teaching more and more and to give approval to customs and practices that strengthen this belief. Therefore, tabernacles evolved as special places in the center of our churches. Also, the Church has begun to prescribe that we should genuflect before the Tabernacle where the Eucharist is reserved. Our Lord is truly there with his Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity.

This is what makes our churches so special. We have God with us! We can be sitting and praying in his presence. As we enter a Catholic church, let us remember this very simple and yet so profound reality. Let us learn to appreciate this presence. Some may say that they don’t feel anything when they pray before the exposed Blessed Sacrament or are looking at the Tabernacle. However, feelings aren’t the goal. Worship is the goal. Feelings of awe, of love, of anything are just tools the Holy Spirit occasionally uses to help us grow closer to Christ (and we should be grateful to Him for these little gifts and not be greedy). When we built our faith and devotion to God on the feelings, more often than not that relationship with God becomes a roller coaster as our feelings can and do change, and quite often.

True faith build on the revealed truth. Therefore, in this case, the objective is to see and honor in the Eucharist our Lord Jesus Christ (when Jesus established the Eucharist at the Last Supper, he never meant it as an optional thing). The aim is to grow in our faith so that we can belong unreservedly. We want to bend our knees before Him not only to adore Him, but also to align our hearts with His and to learn to accept His will more fully. Like in marriage, in our relationship with God it is not about feelings, but about living out the commitment in faithfulness whether we feel like it or not. Jesu Christ is always here in the Eucharist, let us be here for Him.
