FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) Today (Sunday), at the Shrine of St. Elizabeth of Hungary we are celebrating the solemnity of St. Elizabeth, the patron of the shrine church. Whenever a consecrated church celebrates the feast of its patron, the liturgical law makes it a solemnity. As such, it then supersedes an ordinary Sunday. A warm welcome also to our guests who may be visiting our shrine church today. We are happy to be here celebrating a Mass and we are happy that you are here today with us.
(2) On this occasion, I would like to thank all of you who have contributed with your gifts, talents and treasures to this celebration.
(3) Last week it was great to see that we had 18 children for our brief session of catechesis. The next session will be on Sunday, December 1, after the 11AM Mass. All children are welcome and the sessions last about 15 minutes.
ELIZABETH OF HUNGARY: In Hungary, she is celebrated on November 19, but in the rest of the world she is commemorated on November 17. She was the daughter of King Endre II of Hungary, wife of Louis, Landgrave of Thuringia, and mother of three children. After the death of her husband, she endured humiliation with a cheerful spirit, and following the example of St. Francis of Assisi, she accepted poverty and devoted herself to caring for the sick. She died at the age of twenty-four (1231) and was canonized a few years later.
MARGARET OF HUNGARY PRAYER GROUP: In the Holy Gospels we read: “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing” (Jn 15:5). How often we forget or ignore this basic fact? How often we think of reaching out to God only when our strength runs out, or we feel helpless and hopeless, or we are out of human solutions and don’t know what to do? Unfortunately, this is how many Christians see prayer. An emergency backup for the difficult moments in life. However, this is not the Catholic understanding of prayer. Prayer is a vital aspect of the Christian life, essential for growth in faith, hope, and charity. It is the means by which we communicate with God, acknowledging His power and goodness, expressing our dependence on Him, cultivate a deeper understanding of His will and receive grace to conform our lives to His plan. Therefore, prayer is a personal relationship with the living and true God, which makes us realize that everything depends on Him. In fact, keeping Jesus’ words in mind, we should begin and do everything with the invocation of His name. I would like to establish a prayer group here at the parish and I will share more in the next bulletin.
